POST TITLE:Senior Support Worker

ACCOUNTABLE:Home Manager / Team Leader

BASIC HOURS:To work on a flexible 24 hour system, including some sleep-in duties where necessary.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:To support and assist the service users in all aspects of their daily lives. Ensuring they receive a good standard of physical, emotional and social care.

To support the Manager / Team Leader in the day to day running of the service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

ADMINISTRATION:

  1. The post holder will be expected to assume a level of responsibility designated by the home manager / team leader.
  2. To develop a full knowledge and understanding of administrative procedures pertaining to the service users.
  3. Ensure that satisfactory recordings are made in relation to all service users, for example, daily recordings, monthly reports, reviews and support plans.
  4. To be aware of the Care Quality Commission, its role and the essential outcomes of quality and safety.
  5. Ensure that all medication is stored appropriately and is administered in line with CQC requirements and Company policies and procedures.
  6. Ensure that all complaints / grievances are acted upon and that the Manager / Team Leader are informed where appropriate.

STAFFING:

  1. Support the Manager / Team Leader in the management of staff
  2. To take responsibility for the running of shifts when working, reporting to the staff preceding or succeeding the shift and ensuring a handover is given
  3. Develop and maintain effective communication systems, promote good relationships and to provide effective support to all staff
  4. When required to support the manager / team leader in the preparation of rotas and making adjustments to allow for changing circumstances
  5. To oversee the running of the service in the absence of the manager / team leader, advising staff as necessary to correct procedures
  6. To work as part of a team
  7. To provide specific support to staff such as mentoring, inductions and supervision sessions.
  8. Ensure that all policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to at all times.
  9. To provide on-call support to staff on occasion in agreement with the manager /team leader

SERVICE USERS:

  1. To undertake the role of key-worker for specific service users as directed by the homes manager/team leader.
  2. To participate in assessing and planning to meet the individuals needs with support from the homes manager / team leader.
  3. To participate in review meetings with the care manager and families to effectively plan for a positive future and develop a realistic support plan.
  4. Assist the service users with their individual support plans and help them to achieve their goals.
  5. Participate in providing day time activities for the service users.
  6. Undertake a training and educational role with the service users on a group or individual basis as part of their on-going program of support and development.
  7. Provide a high level of dignity, respect and value to the service users in all areas of contact.
  8. Provide respect for their personal wishes, choices, space and possessions and have due regard to the level of disability of all service users and respect their individuality.
  9. In line with our policy of developing community awareness, you will be expected to show a level of commitment and initiative and forge links with community facilities to enable the respective client group to develop their potential in all areas.
  10. Identify any service users need to see GP’s, dentists, chiropodists etc. Ensuring they are accompanied on these appointments if they wish.
  11. Assist service users in their personal care where appropriate.
  12. Administer medication where appropriate, in line with the company’s policy on medication.
  13. Support service users to and undertake tasks of a domestic nature, eg purchasing food, cooking, laundry, house cleaning etc.
  14. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  15. Report all accidents/incidents or their health hazards in line with the company policy.
  16. Develop and maintain professional relationships with service user’s relatives, outside agencies and other professionals.
  17. The post holder will be expected to drive/escort service users as appropriate.

GENERAL:

  1. To participate in regular supervision sessions and individual personal reviews with your homes manager/team leader, and attend regular staff meetings.
  2. The post holder will be required to attend in service training programs.
  3. To be aware of and work within the company’s policies and procedures, including the regulations of Health and Safety at Work Act.

Clear written and verbal communication skills. / 

Must have appropriate life skills, and carry out a range of personal care tasks as stated in personal service users plans. / 
Ability to work as part of a team / 
Experience of working with adults with a learning disability /
mental illness and understanding the issues they face / 
Empathy with the aims and philosophy of the organisation / 
Able to form good working relationships with a wide variety of people inside and outside of the organisation / 
Ability to work in a flexible manner, responding to changes in work load priorities / 
Ability to prioritise tasks and to appropriately use / delegate available resources / 
Ability to administer medication / 
Ability to work unsupervised / 
Excellent report writing skills / 
Good numerical skills for cash handling / 
Ability to lead and motivate staff / 

To have demonstrated relevant experience of working with people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours / 
To have achieved or be working towards NVQ or Health & Social Care Diploma Level 3 / 
To have demonstrated experience of supervising staff / 
To have experience of working with outside agencies / 
To have experience of writing specific support plans for service users / 
To have experience of completing risk assessments / 

Display the ability to manage your own time to ensure all tasks are completed accurately and efficiently. / 
Willingness to work flexibly according to the needs of the service, including evenings, weekends, night duties and sleep-ins as required / 
