Arts Appreciation Group Ely May 2017

Hello everyone,

It has been lovely to meet up with you at our recent meetings. The trip to The Higgins museum was a great day out. I hope you saw the report in the U3A newsletter. Richard Swift gave a fascinating tour through art history of the modern period to a small but enthusiastic group of members. Deborah Monteiro gave us a most informative presentation looking at gardens in Impressionist painting, bringing our tour up to date.

As you would have expected the talk and tour by Dr Vicky Avery was a real treat! If you haven’t been to the exhibition Madonna’s and miracles, it is well work a visit. (It runs until 4th June )

Events Programme

Tuesday 23rd May. David Kimbell will return with – an afternoon with Schumann. Upstairs in the Cathedral Centre. 2.00pm for 2.30 pm. Tickets , pre-booked £5 including refreshments .

Do bring musical friends along to listen to David and hear some wonderful music. Schumann is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Works such as Carnaval, Symphonic Studies, Kinderszenen, Kreisleriana, and the Fantasie in C are among his most famous. A treat for the ears.

An additional event.

Thursday 8th June . Andy English will talk about "Wood Engraving for Illustration. " Upstairs in the Cathedral Centre. 2.00pm for 2.30 pm. Tickets , pre-booked £5 including refreshments .

Andy lives and works locally. Although mainly self taught as an engraver, Andy has studied with Sarah Van Niekirk ( an acknowledged expert in the art of wood engraving ) Printmaking now dominates his artistic output and he is known across the printmaking world. He is an elected member of the Society of Wood Engravers and the Cambridge Drawing Society. In addition, Andy is a member of the North American Wood Engravers Network. He has exhibited extensively in the UK and also in the USA. His work has been included in books by Susan Hill, Philip Pullman, : "Here We Are" (limited to 100 copies published by the Wood Engravers Network USA 1999), " A Wood Engraver's Globe (Primrose Hill Press, London 2002) and the new edition of "Engraved Gardens" (Primrose Hill press, London 2001), as well as on postage stamps. Apart from independent prints, Andy’s output includes bookplates and illustrations.

He is going to demonstrate how engraving is done, how it has developed from Bewick/Blake through Victorian illustration, its adoption by artists in the early 1920s-30s and how he uses it to illustrate books, make bookplates and stamps (real and imaginary).

Bookings can be made by phoning or e-mailing Linda on 01353 699672 I will also be taking bookings at some of the U3A monthly meetings. PLEASE make bookings as soon as you can, as it helps with catering and seat numbers.

The future

I am exploring the possibility of a trip to Elton Hall and gardens in late June ( avoiding Ashley’s trip ) (www.eltonhall.com ) It is in Elton near Peterborough so I thought we could also take in the Cathedral , John Claire cottage and perhaps the Peterborough museum. Minimum number at the Hall for a group visit is 20, so it would be helpful to know who would be interested, costs and dates permitting.

The Rev. Dr Lynne Broughton who gave us the fascinating “Imagery of the 7 deadly sins” presentation has offered to give us a series of 3 linked talks across a 2 week period ( topic tbc but she offered other cathedrals, parish churches or a thematic talk before her last visit ) perhaps in September. Do let me know if you would be interested.

Our U3A committee has given all coordinators ICE ( in case of emergency ) cards to give to all members, so please ask for one . It has been suggested that these should be collected before all trips (and perhaps meeting, too ) so that coordinators have the correct details about medical conditions, allergies and contact names and phone number should the need arise.

As I said in the last newsletter I have decided that I will only continue as coordinator until Christmas 2017, when I will step down. This means that I will not be making any arrangements beyond the Christmas party in December. If you enjoy Arts App and wish it to continue now is the time to think about helping with the organisation of this large group. Whether you are a long standing or a newish member please consider that two or three friends together could share the organising between them; I will be happy to have members work with me through the rest of the year. In addition we really could do with a treasurer just to keep the record of income and expenditure up to date.

Yours in the spirit of U3A,

Linda
