Introduction

The list is an update of original information gathered through a survey carried out by Bonnar Associates, of all Scottish Museums Council members and all Scottish Arts Council clients, including a sample of individual artists. The firms included have all been used satisfactorily by the clients who named them, and these have been included so that you may contact them if you wish. Some other transport firms that have been recommended are not included on this list at their own choice.

Other Resources

Organisations and artists have used a creative range of other means to transport low security well-packaged items. These include: post buses, local

authority library vans (both particularly useful in rural areas), Red Star, and finding extra space on another

organisation's vehicle. By travelling with the work the following have also been used; taxi (a small-scale sculpture exhibition!), and unframed work in tubes or portfolios.

Useful Ideas

Galleries, venues and artists across Scotland were asked to contribute ideas on how they had overcome transport problems. The responses are collated below.

We have used our Local Authority Direct Services transit van, a trailer, and staff cars. (Gordon District Council)

We have used Red Star door to door service/same day for small items, that are non fragile (AberdeenArtGallery)

Exceptionally where space has been available and no diversion necessary, ACGB have carried material from Ayr to London. However this is not available on a regular user basis. There are some excellent general haulage carriers available but many change load between vans on route. Loads are usually taken on a 'shared space' basis. (MacLaurinArtGallery)

For touring exhibitions in Scotland we use our own vehicle or a hire vehicle. We will use TNT or other non-specialist companies if (and only if) the work is robust. (City Art Centre)

Making portable work that rolls onto tubes for transporting as hand luggage in planes. (Leisure Services)

Use of mobile library service. (Sutherland District Council)

If frames can be acquired locally, unframed prints can be posted cheaply using Datapost. If an artist is travelling from abroad, he/she could bring unframed material as hand luggage. (SmithArtGallery)

In the Highland Region we have used the Local Authority mobile library van to collect works for the SSA's Annual Exhibitions from collection points in libraries in Wick, Thurso,

FortWilliam and Portree. (Society of Scottish Artists)

For small-scale exhibitions - use the taxi. (Scottish Sculpture Trust)

I priced up a multi-purpose touring vehicle based on a 7.5 chassis, to include very flexible floor locking point for seating/cases/scenery; provision for stage curtains/sidedrop with extending legs footlights; multiple tying points(1995 prices)

capital expenditure £50k

Revenue - specialist driver handler - £10k

on costs £5k. (Ross and Cromarty Leisure Services)

Magnus the Arts Bus. (Nairn District Council)

Good reliable service in Scotland who are aware of standards used as in European services. (CCA)

The library service regularly takes a van out to the islands and with training in packing, handling, crate making etc, could become a very useful resource for the West of Scotland and other areas. (Argyll and Bute District Council)

Postbus, normal service bus. (An Tuireann Arts Centre)

In the past transport has been existing resources within the Council, e.g. Parks Department, Cleansing Department, and the Sports Minibus and trailer. Apart from moving bits of equipment around all these means are unsuitable for the transport of exhibitions and exhibits. (Annandale and Eskdale District Council)

We have over used the District Council Mobile Van. (Isle of MullMuseum)

Our transport needs are generally fulfilled through Lothian Community Transport Services. (Collective Gallery)
