Mr. Jenkins
Sixth grade art is a course of study designed to introduce the students to the elements of art and the principles of design, which will be explored through various medias and techniques. The course is also designed to develop the students’ divergent problem solving skills, critical judgments about art, and the appreciation and influence of art from other cultures.
Textbooks: Art Talk; Introducing Art; Exploring Art; and Understanding Art
Resources: Slides, visuals, online resources, art reference books & technical guides
Goals/Objectives:
(1)To identify and utilize the elements of art and principles of design
(2)To create works of art by exploring a variety of media and techniques
(3)To develop an appreciation and respect for the arts
(4)To analyze, evaluate, and form critical responses towards art, and
(5)To demonstrate proper, safe, and respectful use of art tools, supplies and resources
Grading Scheme:
Performance on art projects: craftsmanship, creativity & original ideas, fulfillment of objective of the lesson, effort, and completion: 50%
Quizzes; Sketches; Handouts: 30%
Warm up activities collected every Friday: 15%
Daily Grade: 5%
Late or missing work: Following an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact me about missing work, and obtain their make-up assignment. Work not submitted may result in a grade of “zero”.
***Please note: The percentages are set up so that the student with a limited art background can have reasonable success in the class. In other words, your grade is not dependent on artistic ability, but you must put forth effort and follow the guidelines of each concept we study.
**Art projects will be determined throughout the nine weeks based on the materials that we have in the classroom.
Rules and Procedures for Safety and Success in the ArtRoom:
These policies and procedures are important and extremely easy to work with. By following the rules and procedures, you will achieve success and have a lot of fun in art.
- Arrive to class on time, quietly, and in a mature fashion. Find your assigned seat and sit quietly until Mr. Jenkins takes attendance and gives the daily instructions. Refer to the school tardy policy in your student handbook. Begin on “warm-up” activity. (usually artwork is displayed and essential based questions are posed about the artwork.
- Remain in your assigned seat unless there is a classroom-related reason for getting
Up. No one is allowed to roam around the room.
- Respect and use all art supplies appropriately-abuse of art supplies will not be
tolerated. Return all supplies to their designated locations-do not take any art
supplies out of the classroom.
- Do not ask to leave the classroom unless it is an emergency. Use the restroom
before you arrive to class. Visits to other teachers and guidance are granted
ONLY if you have a pass from that individual.
- Absolutely no roughhousing. Safety is a priority, and any action that jeopardizes
the safety of you, another student, or the teacher will not be tolerated. Never
throw any type of object in the classroom. Your classmates have
the right to expect you to keep safety in mind as well as their property and
you have the right to expect the same.
- Do not touch, mark or otherwise harm the art work of another. Students’ work is
highly valued in this room and any damage done by one another’s work is
considered a serious disciplinary matter.
- Work productively with limited stops. Art projects should reflect your greatest
effort! Sleeping, excessive socializing and other kinds of unproductive activities are strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.
- At the designated clean-up time, follow all specified clean-up procedures we have
established and make sure that your work station is clean. Your table/floor area
must be clean before you are dismissed. Wait quietly for closure and dismissal
from the class by Mr. Jenkins..not anyone else.
- As always, treat the teacher, peers, and yourself with respect. Your willingness to
be respectful, responsible, fair, trustworthy, and cooperative will be appreciated
and are very important to the success of our class.
