TEXT: EXPLORING ART: A GLOBAL THEMATIC APPROACH by Margaret Lazzari and Dona Schlesier (third edition)

CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Introduction to the visual arts, illustrating the place of art in its social and cultural setting.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This 3 credit course is a thorough introduction to the visual arts. In ART 160 We will investigate artworks made from prehistoric to today. We will examine the art of different cultures and how it provides relevance to individual societies. You will learn how to identify prominent movements, media and categories related to visual art. In addition, we will examine art and artists starting with the cave paintings to contemporary art from around the world.
GOALS OF THIS COURSE:
- To become familiar with a variety of historical and contemporary arts movements.
- To be able to identify and apply the formal elements of visual art.
- To knowledgably analyze works of art in terms of composition, content and media.
- To become familiar with a variety of artists and how their styles and approaches related to world cultures and political movements.
- To be able to give opinions on how an art movement or piece of art affects you personally (likes and dislikes).
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
1. CLASS DISCUSSION: Every week we will discuss the chapters of book for a portion of the class period. Printed notes (from text) will be given to students by instructor before each class. Discs with slide presentations will be distributed the week before each exam. Each student should try to participate in class.
2. SLIDES & VIDEOS Second part of class with consist of art history beginning with cave paintings and working up to contemporary art. We discuss the paintings and other forms of art of each generation.
3. SHORT PROS & CONS DISCUSSION INITIATED BY EACH STUDENT
ASSESSMENT:
EXAM 1 = 25%
EXAM 2 =25%
EXAM 3 = 25%
ESSAY ON YOUR PRO AND CONS OF AN ARTIST OF YOUR CHOICE AND HIS PAINTING = 25%
TOTAL PERCENTAGE POSSIBLE FOR THE COUSE = 100
EXAMS: Exams will be composed of true and false QUESTIONS that relate to the content of textbook & class discussion. The images in the exam may or may not be from your book or slides shown during class.
Please note that in college grades are based upon academic achievement, not effort.
No extra credit will be given to improve low grades.
Attendance Policy: Regular participation in class is important. A student cannot participate unless they attend class regularly. Grades may be lowered if a student misses more than three class periods. A 24 hour notice before or after absence should be given to instructor.
Withdrawal: Individual students are responsible for withdrawing from the course. If you quit coming to class, and you fail to withdraw, you will earn an F for the course.
Policy of Academic Integrity:
Of special concern in a research semester is your attention to GBC’s policy of academic integrity: students are expected to be honest. If ideas are borrowed, the source must be given credit. Internet sources are subject to documentation as well as careful evaluation. We will address the matter of unintentional plagiarism in class, but it occurs when a student paraphrase of the source is too close to the original. Plagiarism is a violation of the standards of intellectual honesty. Students who violate such standards are subject to punishment, ranging from failing a class to dismissal from the institution.

Students must read and understand an college-level textbook exploring art as a global and thematic approach

· Recognize functions of various selections of text, i.e. offering evidence to support a point
· Identify the purpose of the author as presented in a text
· Summarize and /or paraphrase main points
· Use and understanding of appropriate terminology necessary for ART 160
Measurement of student outcomes
All ART 160 students produce a term-paper which fulfills the above standards as well as understanding the text-book. All students are asked to present on a specific theme in class.
Critical Thinking: Measurement of outcomes
Ability to identify and analyze works of art and architecture from different periods and to develop the skill to discern high art, pop art and popular art; outcomes are based on three in-class examinations.

Use basic computer technology competently in current applications.

ART 160 meets the personal wellness objective to some degree by giving the student the ability to understand and appreciate art and their own personal place in the universe.
