Summer Geography Workshops
EXPLORING GEOGRAPHY AND NON-FICTION READING PROGRAM
Explore a new non-fiction reading program by National Geographic Society that links geography subjects to the Windows on Literacy program. With over 150 books in the program, the Windows on Literacy program helps students to improve reading levels while expanding their geographic knowledge. Teachers will receive Windowson Literacy materials, lesson strategies, and a teacher assessment guide to the program.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY READING EXPECTATIONS PROGRAM
Learn how geography content may be used to increase reading comprehension and skills. Reading Expectations is a new National Geographic Society reading program with over 30 titles which combine geography content with reading skills. The workshop participants will receive books, a teacher assessment guide, and lesson strategies.

The National Geographic Society=s website is the place for you! Teachers will spend the day using the Internet to explore the new and exciting materials coming from the National Geographic Society.

A geographic look at on-going conflicts in our world. Conflict areas covered include the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia. Maps, teacher guides, and lesson strategies are provided for participants.

The workshop looks at why industries locate where they do. The WalMart phenomena is also examined and its impact on downtown business areas. Lesson strategies, maps, and teaching materials are offered to the participants.

ARKANSAS GEOGRAPHIC ALLIANCE
SUMMER GEOGRAPHY INSTITUTES SCHEDULE
The Arkansas Geographic Alliance will offer three (3) one week long institutes this summer. The instiutes will be held at the following places and dates:
June 25-29 UAPB, Pine Bluff
July 9-13 Crowley=s Ridge Co-op, Harrisburg
July 16-20 Southeast Arkansas Co-op, Monticello
The institutes will allow teachers to familiarize themselves with geographic tools and technology. Topics will
include digital camera use and application, community atlas development, producing a book project for students,
accessing the Internet, scanning techniques, and web page development. A local conservation project will be the
year end culminating activity which will have teachers using geographic tools and technology to acquire local data
on a conservation issue.
In addition to the 3 one-week institutes, there will be two (2) institutes held on the following dates and places:
June 18-19Hot Springs
July 23-24Springdale
These short courses will cover a limited number of topics including web page development, slide show development
and interactive mapping.
Twenty participants will be allowed in each institute/short course. All will receive $500 worth of materials,
mileage, lunches and break snacks/drinks.
