Song of Approach: “Arise, My Soul, Arise”
Words: Charles Wesley, 1742. Music: Kevin Twit, 1996. ©1996 Kevin Twit Music. CCLI #2570138

Arise, my soul, arise, shake off your guilty fears;
The bleeding sacrifice, in my behalf appears;
Before the throne my Surety stands,
Before the throne my Surety stands,
My name is written on His hands.

CHORUS:
Arise, arise, arise; Arise, my soul, arise.
Arise, arise, arise
Arise, my soul, arise. Shake off your guilty fears and rise

He ever lives above, for me to intercede;
His all redeeming love, His precious blood, to plead;
His blood atoned for every race,
His blood atoned for every race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace. (Repeat Chorus)

Five bleeding wounds He bears; received on Calvary;
They pour effectual prayers; they strongly plead for me:
“Forgive him, O forgive” they cry,
“Forgive him, O forgive” they cry,
“Nor let that ransomed sinner die!” (Repeat Chorus)

My God is reconciled; His pardoning voice I hear;
He owns me for His child; I can no longer fear
With confidence I now draw nigh,
With confidence I now draw nigh,
And “Father, Abba, Father” cry. (Repeat Chorus)

Call to Worship: Psalm 107:1-9

“Christ Is Risen”
Words & Music: Matt Maher , Mia Fieldes ©2009 Thankyou Music. CCLI #5242683

Let no one caught in sin remain

Inside the lie of inward shame,
But fix our eyes upon the cross,
And run to Him Who showed great love
And bled for us, Freely You’ve bled for us.

CHORUS:
Christ is risen from the dead,
Trampling over death by death,
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave.
Christ is risen from the dead,
We are one with Him! Again:
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave.

Beneath the weight of all our sin,
You bowed to none but heaven’s will;
No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown,
No burden great can hold You down;
In strength You reign,
Forever let Your church proclaim (Chorus)

BRIDGE:
O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light,
The glory of God has defeated the night.
O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light,
Our God is not dead, He’s alive! He’s alive! (Chorus)

We Confess Our Sins: Romans 6:20-21

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death.

Prayer of Confession: Psalm 51:1-4, 9-12, 16-17

Leader:Have mercy on us, O God, according to your unfailing love;

according to your great compassion, blot out our transgressions.

People:Wash away all our iniquity, and cleanse us from our sin.

For we know our transgressions, and our sin is always before us.

Leader:Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.

People:Hide your face from our sins and blot out all our iniquity.

Leader:Create in us a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within us

People:Do not cast us from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from us.

Leader:Restore to us the joy of your salvation and grant us a willing spirit, to sustain us.

People:You do not delight in sacrifice, or we would bring it;

Leader:you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

People:Our sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;

Leader:a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Personal, Silent Prayers

Assurance of God’s Forgiveness: Micah 7:18-20

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities under foot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. You will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.

Come Thou long-expected Jesus

Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.

Israel’s strength and consolation,
Hope of all the saints Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

CHORUS:
Come Thou long-awaited Emmanuel.

Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. (Repeat Chorus)

By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne. (Repeat Chorus)

Reading for Today’s Teaching: Ecclesiastes 9:11-18

“Rock of Ages”
Words: Augustus Toplady (Chorus by Cameron Gray); Music: Cameron Gray. ©2005 Rough Harbor Music.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be for sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.

Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone

Rock of Ages, grace enough.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked come to Thee for dress,
Helpless look to Thee for grace;
Foul I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

Sermon: “A Familiar Story”

Ecclesiastes 9:11-18

“By Thy Mercy”
Words by James J. Cummins, 1839. Music by Greg Thompson ©2004 Greg Thompson Music

Jesus, Lord of life and glory,
Bend from heav’n thy gracious ear;
While our waiting souls adore thee,
Friend of helpless sinners, hear.

From the depth of nature’s blindness,
From the hard’ningpow’r of sin,
From all malice and unkindness,
From the pride that lurks within.

CHORUS:
By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord
By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord

When temptation sorely presses,
In the day of Satan’s pow’r,
In our times of deep distresses,
In each dark and trying hour.

When the world around is smiling,
In the time of wealth and ease,
Earthly joys our hearts beguiling,
In the day of health and peace. (Chorus)

In our weary hours of sickness,
In our times of grief and pain,
When we feel our mortal weakness,
When all human help is vain.

In the solemn hour of dying,
In the awful judgment day,
May our souls, on thee relying,
Find thee still our Rock and Stay. (Chorus)

Worship Service

Sunday, November 19, 2017

10:00 AM

Welcome to Parkside Church

We’re glad you’re with us today. Our hope is that through worship today you will meet with the Living God. As God has called us his children, we also hope you will experience the Parkside community as you would a friendly family who has invited you for a holiday meal. Whether you are a longtime member of the family, or curious and coming with questions and skepticism, welcome.

Children and Childcare

Children learn to worship much the same as they learn to eat with others at the table. We welcome the noise of little ones in the worship service as they learn to sing, listen, and eventually participate in the service. A nursery with a brief children’s lesson is available during the second part of the service, for ages 1-4. A note pageconnected to the Scripture of the sermon and the worship service is available each week for kids ages 5-12.An audio feed of the service is available in the picnic area.
