Introduction to the Course:

Preparation of preliminary and working drawings for an intermediate-sized commercial or institutional building.

Specific Goals to the Course:

a. Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to:

•Understand the information required to assemble a set of construction documents. (a)

•Understand the difference between residential and commercial building drawing

requirements. (a,b)

•Understanding of how to properly assemble building materials-brick, concrete, steel, wood, into a functioning building system. (a, b, d)

•Understand basic structural concepts for calculating loads and selecting beam, column, and lintel sizes and to pick wood joists and trusses from a table. (b)

•Understand the mechanical/electrical/plumbing requirements to be considered in architectural design. (d)

•Ability to research methods of construction and materials required to make a written

presentation. (g)

•Understand how contractors interpret drawings to construct real buildings.

•Be able to see how this course can relate to other class work and to develop sufficient

confidence to build upon this information in the working world. (h)

•AutoCad – make a presentation of drawing basics to class or other related skills that the class could use.

•Detailed presentation of the various drawing types with examples.

•Brick and Block Masonry, mortar – types and methods of construction.

•Steel columns and lintels, materials, calculations, construction methods what they are used for and where.

•Waterproofing and flashing, what they are used for and where.

•Concrete, materials, methods of construction.

•Masonry veneer construction.

•Wood stud framing and metal stud framing, comparisons.

•Gypsum board materials, applications to studs or other structure, joint treatment and finishes.

•Acoustical ceilings, tile materials and suspension systems.

•Painting, materials, interior versus exterior.

•Building codes and zoning.

•Schedules- room finish; door; window; hardware.

•Foundations and footings, what they are used for and where; calculations.

•Wood trusses for floor and roof structures – types, materials, spans, etc.

•Roll comparisons of Architect; Owner; Contractor; Building Officials.

•Personal “on the job” construction or design/drafting experience you have had or now do.

•Other topic (check with me first).
