Ireland has become the first country in Europe to ban smoking in pubs, clubs and restaurants. In a move that is being watched with keen interest by other EU countries, the government has imposed a ban in the hope of cutting down on the estimated 7,000 tobacco-related deaths a year. Anyone caught breaking the law faces a fine of €3,000. The initiative has caused concerns among pub owners and the tobacco industry and some pubs are trying to find ways to get around the ban. A Dublin pub has converted an old double-decker bus to act as a smoking den just outside the place in the car park. The police are also uneasy, as they fear the ban will be unenforceable. The majority of Irish citizens, however, support the measures. In a poll taken last year 81% said they favoured a ban in pubs.
