The national Truman Scholarship competition awards approximately 70 scholarships of thirty-thousand dollars ($30K) annually to college “juniors”who are planning to go to graduate school. (See eligibility criteria below and on the Truman website as the definition of "junior" is based on the planned date of graduation:

UDM students with strong academic backgrounds, experience in public service (broadly defined) are encouraged to apply.

The Truman Foundation seeks to promote public service, which the foundation defines "as employment in government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organization, nongovernmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public-service oriented nonprofit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment." Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a graduate degree program funded by the Truman Scholarship.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for consideration for the Truman Scholarship, a student must:

Be a U.S. Citizen or National

Be nominated by his or her university

Be a full-time junior-level student at a four-year institution pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2014-2015 academic year.

“Junior” specifically means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2015 and August 2016, or a student in his or her third year of collegiate study who expects to graduate during the 2014-2015 academic year, or a senior-level student who is a resident of Puerto Rico or the Islands: Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Required Materials:

Please submit a letter of intent to Dr. Kathleen Zimmerman-Oster at y midnight, January 16, 2015.The letter should include reference to the following information:

Grade point from all colleges attended

A list of community service activities

Evidence of leadership

The names and contact information of three people who could write letters of recommendation, if needed.

The top applicants will be chosen to submit an application for The Truman Scholarship. These applicants will be required to submit the following materials to The Truman Foundation by February 3, 2015:
