Archibald M. McLellan

Colonel Archibald M. McLellan joined the United States Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course in December of 1986 and attended Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. After commissioning, Second Lieutenant McLellan attended The Basic School and graduated in April 1991.

2ndLt McLellan attended Naval Flight Training in Pensacola, Florida. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in May 1992 and was designated a naval aviator in September 1992. His first operational assignment was to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group-26 as a CH-53E pilot. He served in Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-461, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-362, and Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron-264. His duties included billets in logistics, maintenance, operations, and intelligence. During this tour he completed deployments with both SPMAGTF-8 to the Caribbean and a LF-6F with the 26th MEU.

In July of 1998, Captain McLellan was assigned to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One, Yuma, Arizona, as an instructor pilot. In addition to instructing in the CH-53E, he was qualified in the CH-53D. His duties included USMC TRAP/CSAR/PR SME, CH-53 Division Lead, chaired the development of advanced mission planning software, and completed the CH-53 Ramp Mounted Weapon System Tactical Demonstration/Operational Evaluation. In March 2000 he was promoted to Major. In April of 2001 Major McLellan was recognized by the Association of Naval Aviation as the MAWTS-1 Instructor Pilot of the year.


In August 2001 Major McLellan attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia. He received a Masters Degree in Military Studies and was a Distinguished Graduate. In June 2002 he was transferred to 2nd Marine Air Wing where his duties were as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer, Operations Officer and the Executive Officer for HMH-461. He completed two deployments to CJTF-Horn of Africa (HOA) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In August of 2005 Major McLellan was assigned to Plans Policy & Operations (PP&O), Headquarters Marine Corps and worked in the Future Operations Group (FOG). As an action officer he was involved in service level force sourcing issues for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. In January of 2006 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. In March of 2006 he was assigned to MAG-29.

In June 2006 Lieutenant Colonel McLellan assumed command of HMH(T)-302, the CH-53D/E Fleet Replacement Squadron, responsible for the training and preparation of the next generation of Heavy Lift Assault Support Pilots and Enlisted Aircrew for world wide deployments in the Fleet Marine Force.

In June of 2008 Lieutenant Colonel McLellan attended the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery Al. He received a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies. In June 2009 he was assigned to USSOCOM J3X at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa Fl. During this tour he served as the Senior Operations Officer, Director of the Office of Regional Studies and Surveys and completed a deployment to Afghanistan. In July 2012 he was promoted to Colonel and assigned to MARSOC as the G-2.


Colonel McLellan’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star and a Navy Achievement Medal. He is married to the former Pamela Mislevy of Tunkhannock PA. They have two daughters Lexington 13 and Katie 11.
