Post Title:Teaching Assistant

Job Purpose:

  • To support the education and social development of children through the provision of support in the classroom and in interventions.

Accountable To:

  • Responsible to the Headteacher who will provide guidance on school policy and practices.
  • When working in a classroom or other educational situation, the teaching assistant will work under the direction of the class teacher in charge.

Main Duties:

Teaching and Learning

  1. Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the direction and guidance of the head teacher, SENCO and class teachers.
  2. Provide support in literacy and numeracy for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
  3. Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists and occupational therapists, as necessary.
  4. Assist class teachers with maintaining pupil records.
  5. Support pupils with emotional or behavioural problems and help develop their social skills.
  6. Support teaching staff in providing for the safe supervision of children
  7. Care for children who may become ill and respond to emergencies in the most appropriate and caring manner where necessary, in conjunction with a qualified ‘first-aider’.
  8. Ensure that resources are available within the classroom in order to support teaching staff in accordance with the policy of the school.
  9. Ensure that all materials and equipment are in good working order by, for example repairing/backing books etc.

Administrative Duties

1.Assist the class teacher in the preparationof lessons.

2.Prepare and present displays of students’ work.

3.Support class teachers in photocopying and other tasks in order to support teaching.

4.Undertake other duties from time to time as the head teacher requires.

Standards and Quality Assurance

  1. Support the aims and Mission Statement of the school.
  2. Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
  3. Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
  4. Respond flexibly, as appropriate, to the needs of the school in the areas of:
  5. Cloakroom supervision
  6. Dressing and undressing children for PE.
  7. Computers
  8. Reprographics e.g. photocopying
  9. Contribute fully to school life and take part in relevant discussion and meetings (during normal paid hours), which have a bearing on the Teaching Assistant role and/or long term direction of the school.
  10. Assist teachers in the supervision of children taking part in education visits or activities outside school premises.
  11. Support, uphold and contribute to the development of the school’s equal rights policies and practices in respect of both employment issues and the delivery of services to the community.
  12. May from time to time be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility defined in this job description.
  13. Support the School’s Safeguarding Policy and all related policies.
