Archdiocese of Cincinnati

Hamilton County Parish Recycling Initiative

Request for Recycling Containers

INSTRUCTIONS

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has been the recipient of a grant from the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District to improve year-round recycling activities at parishes within the county, especially parish festival events. This effort is being organized through the Archdiocesan Finance Department and Catholic Social Action Office with the approval of Archbishop Dennis Schnurr. Parishes are encouraged to make a request for free recycling containers by filling out this simple form.

The containers are two-wheeled carts, able to hold 64-gallons of any generally accepted recyclables. We hope that the design of these particular carts will accommodate parishes’ needs to move them easily around campuses, to accept a substantial amount of solid waste, and to utilize plastic bags for collection and quick removal of recyclables.

Parishes may request a maximum of 8 containers per parish. To help the Archdiocese decide how a limited number of containers should be distributed for maximum impact, parishes that anticipate a larger number of attendants at all their public events in 2011 (including festivals) and/or demonstrate a commitment to promoting the Church’s teaching to caring for God’s creation will be given more containers. They will become the permanent property of the requesting parish, and they can be used for collecting recyclables at any activities that occur on parish grounds. The Archdiocese will expect that the containers especially be well utilized at all large public functions, such as school gatherings, sporting events, and festivals.

All requests for recycling containers are due in by Friday, April 8. We will notify you of the results of your request by the end of April.

In order to reduce shipping costs and afford more containers, we will have the containers shipped to one location in Hamilton County. The parish will be responsible for picking up and transporting these containers to your parish. We will inform you where the pick-up site will be along with the results of your request. On-going pick-up or delivery of recyclables collected in these containers must also be arranged by the parish.

The Archdiocese realizes that some public functions may benefit from the use of more than just the number of containers that an individual parish has been given. For such events, we recommend that nearby parishes contact each other in order to borrow each others’ containers during the specific times of the events. The Finance Department will keep track of how many carts each parish has been allocated, so please contact Stacey Longbottom at 513-421-3131, ext. 6607, if you would like to know which parishes might be able to work with you.

Between now and December 31, 2011, the Archdiocese will need to report back to the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District certain measurables. In addition, the Archdiocese would like to report to various media sources, including The Catholic Telegraph, the success of our parishes’ recycling efforts. Therefore, the parish should be prepared to report to the Archdiocese by December 2011 how much waste was diverted through use of these containers.

To request these containers, please email, mail or fax the form on the following two pages to:
