ARC 4343 D E S I G N 7-8 (Vertical Studio) SUMMER 2 0 10

Associate Professor Alfredo Andia, Ph.D. | 305 348 6703 |

Meeting Time and Place: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2.00 to 6.15 PM, PCA Studio

ARC 4342 Architectural Design 7 (4 credits): A flexible framework for appropriate investigations of complex spatial, programmatic, contextual, constructional and ethical issues involved in design projects. Course content varies with instructor. Prerequisite: ARC 4335.

ARC 4343 Architectural Design 8 (4 credits):Architectural design explorations of site, building codes, community objectives will be undertaken through individual programming, process and design initiatives for a complex building project. Prerequisite: ARC 4342.

Studio Objectives:

Architectural Design 7is a flexible studio that demands a highlevel of independent research. In addition Design 8 demands for a high level building systems integration to support the development of a design solution. Projects from both studios will use an actual site, will engage in specific community issues, and work with local building codes. The students will engage during this semester into areal case and program that will be under consideration by a government.

Semester Studio Project:

On February 27, 2010, the Bio Bio region in the South of Chile was the epicenter of an 8.8 Richter scale earthquake, the fifth largest in the world since 1900. The earthquake set off tsunami waves that swamped the shores of the South of Chile destroying many coastal towns before moving across the Pacific.

This studio will engage in the reconstruction effort of the community of Llico in the Bio Bio Region. The studio will work closely with the Reconstruction Office of the Bio Bio Region, local universities, and consultants that are related to the reconstruction effort. The studio will engage in communications with different actors using the internet.

Llico is a small coastal town whose inhabitants live primarily from small scale fishing. The tsunami took away a significant part of the houses in the town.

The reconstruction effort willincludea master plan that creates a clear identity for the town, a mitigation plan against Tsunamis, and the development of areas for local tourism related to fishing and beach activities. The effort also involves the reconstruction of approximately 60-to-80 new houses of approximately 450 sf, which has to be constructed for US$10,000 – $12,000 each. The design of the house should also contemplate a future expansionof the house.

Course Evaluation

Students will be evaluated upon performance in the projects. While a satisfactory grade in the course may be attained by the completion of all work required to the satisfaction of the professor, individual initiative and investigation of design and research issues that extend beyond the basic requirements are strongly encouraged.

Grading will be based on the University system.

Class attendance is mandatory. Tardiness is disruptive to class and will definitely affect grades. Two tardiness equals one absence. Four absences will automatically result in a failing grade. No late work will be accepted failing the corresponding grade segment. Absenteeism or tardiness at mid-term or final review will result in a failing grade. Students must be present during the entire length of major reviews.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain, become familiar with, and abide by all Departmental, College and University requirements and regulations. These include but are not limited to:

- The FloridaInternationalUniversity Catalog Division of Student Affairs Handbook of Rights and Responsibilities

- Departmental Curriculum and Program Sheets

- Departmental Policies and Regulations

Student Work

The School of Architecture reserves the right to retain any and all student work for the purpose of record, exhibition and instruction. All students are encouraged to photograph and/or copy all work for personal records prior to submittal to instructor.

Selected student work will be displayed at the School of Architecture Gallery.
