INTRODUCTORY SUMMARY

The Aquatic Safety Assistant is a wireless two-part device intended for children age 1-4 years or non-swimmers, created to reduce the number of drowning’s due to unintentional water entries. The final design includes an armband for the child that triggers the hub controller to alert the guardian of the child when the child’s wristband comes in contact with water. Progress has been made since the project proposal was completed;with the design of the enclosure determined, progress may begin on the electronic programming portion of the project.

MODIFICATIONS

The original design consisted of a single device system that upon water entry would sound an alarm directly from the wristband. The electronic programming of this device appeared to be very simple; however, the problem of the alarm being dampened by the water upon submersion was not something for which a practical solution could be found. The new design is a two-part system: a wristband for a child and a hub to be kept with the guardian of the child. When the sensor in the child's wristband is triggered by water contact, the hub will sound an alarm alerting the guardian. This electronic design of this idea is significantly more complicated, but it is expected to make the device more successful at reducing the incidence of drowning.

ELECTRONICS

The electronics ordered to complete the prototype for the project arrived at St.FX on Thursday February 25, 2016. Programming of the components may now begin. The Arduino microcontroller has been selected because it is very user friendly, it will allow for efficient programming thus allowing more time to test and modify the prototype once it is finished. The sensor design was scheduled to be finished by February 15th 2016 however it wasdecided that the sensor design be pushed forward until the programming is finished.

ENCLOSURE DESIGNS

The general design for the waterproof enclosure has been completed. It will contain the electronics for the child’s wristband. The working design model can be found in Appendix A. Based on the relatively large size of the Arduino microcontroller, it was decided that a pager-style enclosure be used to house the hub components. The hub enclosure will also have a clip to attach to a piece of clothing or belt. The working enclosure design can be found in Appendix B.

A model of this design can be found in Appendix C.

WORK PLANNED

The St.FX circuit’s lab has been booked to begin programming the XBee devices, which is foremost on the schedule—it is to be completed by March 7, 2016. The other major task that must be completed before moving to the final stages of our project is the sensor design.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

To this date, 165.00 Canadian dollars have been invested on the electronics needed to complete the prototype. To see a breakdown of financial statements please refer to our project proposal located on our project website.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the electronic components of the project have been obtained. The programming stage of this project should be completed by March 7, 2016. The project schedule has been rearranged by the completion of the two enclosure designs (with the exception of any minor final modifications). The sensor design has yet to be completed, which was originally scheduled to be finishedby February 15,2016. Despite the slight rearrangement of the project schedule, the project is still expected to be completed one week before the due date. The total cost of the project thus far is 165.00 CAD. The bulk of the financial investment in this project has been made—the final cost of the project is not anticipated to cost more than 200.00 CAD.
