Motor Learning in Ortho and Beyond(speaker: Jon Robinson, PT, DPT, NCS)

Description: Present theoretical perspectives and current principles associated with the control and learning of movement skills and apply them to orthopedic, neurologic and general populations.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the general classification of motor skills.
  2. Understand the theories that attempt to explain how movement skills are controlled.
  3. Distinguish temporary changes in performance from the relatively permanent changes that accompany learning.
  4. Understand the variables that influence the learning of movement skills.
  5. Identifyand evaluate techniques and strategies PTs can employ to enhance learning of motor skills in orthopedic, neurologic and general populations.
  6. To effectively target interventions toward key aspects of movement systems dysfunction

Speaker Biography:

Jon Robinson, PT, DPT, NCS

Board Certified Neurologic Physical Therapist

Jon received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Vermont. He then completed a post-graduate residency in neurologic rehabilitation at Boston University in collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital in Massachusetts. He is a board certified specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy and has worked clinically with people with a variety of neurologic conditions, including those with stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and Parkinson disease in all care settings. He currently serves as clinical lead physical therapist at the University of Vermont Medical Center in the inpatient rehabilitation setting. Additionally he has been adjunct faculty at the University of Vermont and taught course work in motor control and learning and is employed by the Neurologic Physical Therapy Professional Education Consortium serving 33 residency programs as a facilitator of online case studies and journal article reviews to promote application of evidence-based practice.

The Future of PT in VT (Roundtable Discussion)

Description: Discussion of #ChoosePT campaign and how VT PTs and PTAs can impact the opioid epidemic in VT and identify areas that VTAPTA can increase involvement to benefit PTs, PTAs and patients.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify APTA resources to use to promote Physical Therapy impact on opioid epidemic
  2. Identify resources to provide patients to improve understanding of current pain science
  3. Understand various programs and models used throughout the state for patients with chronic pain.
  4. Understand areas of advocacy to improve patient access to physical therapy services
