APT Council President’s report to UAA Assembly

Dave Smith

April 7, 2008

Our last two meetings have been very productive. In our March meeting we were updated by Jim Mullen on the Changes to The Chancellor’s Awards of Excellence program that have been discussed in past meetings. Jim also stressed that he welcomed feedback as they moved forward with date and program changes.

At the same meeting Gary Rice gave his presentation on Students Goal Attainment. This presentation was received by the group and shows just another of the many great and innovative things going on here at UAA.

At our April meeting we had Larry Foster and John Dede come in to update us on the status of Sustainability Coordinators Network and the new Sustainability office here at UAA. Many of our Council members were concerned that we had in somehow slowed the process for moving forward with the coordinators network. John had assured us that with the CTC pilot program that things were moving forward. Larry has also been moving forward with the support of VC Spindle in creating the PD for the new Sustainability Director and establishment of the Sustainability office.

Julia Martinez a council member and UAA Advancement employee talked to us about the UAA/Family Campaign launching and the new programs that are being developed around that program.

We also discussed our concern with how the information was being distributed we regards to the Step Increase changes, health insurance changes, or any other benefits information. We felt that this type of information needs to come directly from our statewide office or HR to staff, not from governance bodies to allow for consistent distribution. I have started discussions with Jim Mullen at HR and Mike Humphrey at Statewide to see where they are with these types of distributions.

A resolution was presented by John Gregoire to urge President Hamilton to consider a direct appointment of Interim Chancellor Fran Ulmer to “Chancellor”. This resolution passed unanimously by council members and will be sent to President Hamilton.

We also mention a distribution that Linda Lazzell had sent to me regarding the UAA Student Diversity Awards. This has been further distributed to the entire council and posted to the governance website.

We are proceeding ahead with our council elections in April; Jim Cummings has done some work with potential nominees that have already been brought forward.

This was another enjoyable and informative meeting. Dave
