APSEA So Chapter : MONTHLY MTG MINI - TRAINING SESSION

August 2010

Topic : Marketing yourself for a new Job

(from Working World Mag)

1. Remember, People do not choose products because they are better.

If a product could be defined with an attractive, identifiable personality, consumers

would connect with an emotional attachment to it and choose it over other products.

2. Today, “Branding Strategy” is a key step for launching new products.

YOU, can identify yourself as a product for your prospective employer.

Branding techniques help you compete for a job. Employers are swamped with

resumes. All things being equal, they will pick the one they are most inclined to

like and trust. With your resume, or when interviewed, convey an appealing and

clearly defined “Brand Personality”.

3. Branding Tactics will broadcast your Core Values & Build your future.

First stage is research; Self analysis. Ask friends, relatives, former supervisors about

yourself. Ask them to be honest. Get the goods and the Bads. Also, of all the people

you worked with or for, who did you respect the most? Why? What qualities did you

admire? Explore your attitudes & the way you normally deal with others & improve.

4. Establish your Core Values; These are the things that make you who you are.

Write a short sentence that clearly defines your personality, what motivates it & what

It hopes to bring to its audience, your prospective employer. Looking at your Core

Values, write 2 sentences, on “How can my Core Values serve my prospective

employer?”and this can be your MissionStatement upon which to build.

5. Now, you are ready to Market Yourself with a new “Label”.

Use your Mission Statement at the top of your Resume or your Cover Letter for your

Application. Bullet Point your Core Values, or what makes you Valuable to

the future employer. During the interview, explore their feelings about some of your

Core Values. Do they match up? Speak up and show how they “Match” with what

the prospective employer is looking for. Think of creative ways to express your Core

Values and show how they can benefit the Unityou wish to work for. On the resume

with bold type, indicate these points but be consistent.

6. Rememberwhat your relatives, close friends &close co-workers shared with you.

They are the ones who see in you what you normally project, intentionally or un-

intentionally. Capitalize and enhance your good traits & project them during your

interviews and on your resume because you have now modified your personality and

attitude. You are nowa “new product” with a new Brand that appeals to the

consumer, your new employer.

See you at our Next APSEA meeting where we discuss this. Let’s stay connected, PP
