TimeMachine

TimeMachine is a Jim Brown designed Searunner 31 A-Frame Trimaran. The builder (Joe LaGuardia) added a foot at the waterline after consulting with the designer. The extra foot gives a performance boost, but most importantly, some much appreciated room in the galley and settee area. It doesn’t sound like much but it makes a big difference when you have dinner guests. The other conspicuous design modification is the forward cabin which comes to a point with two windows instead of the traditional rounded “cyclops” look. I think it gives it more of a racy Star Wars effect. During construction every effort was made to reduce weight. In fact, Joe claimed to be 1000 lbs under design weight by using foam wherever possible and by creating a clean minimalist interior. The boat has a small binnacle wheel steering.

TimeMachine was built in Nevada during the 1990′s and first launched on Lake Tahoe in 1997. Built as a personal boat by a professional builder, the quality of construction is outstanding. The builder, Joe LaGuardia, worked at a number of commercial yards in California including Kettenburg. TimeMachine was the 4th boat he built for himself.

Designed as a cutter, it has been modified using a design from the design office for a Farrier 31 rig.

It is powered by a new 15 hp Tohatsu 2-stroke outboard with a 25″ shaft. It allows motoring at over 7 knots in calm water and the extra long shaft never cavitates except in the most severe conditions. There is a solar panel as well as an 80-watt alternator to charge the batteri

What’s done

- All rotting or suspicious pieces in the hull were ground out and filled.

- The five fixed ports (two on each side and the stern) were replaced with opening ports with screens. The forward ports were also replaced.

- The port side of the galley was totally replaced: new double sink, new faucet, new counter, new tubing, new through-hull for outflow, using fixtures like the original. The galley brightwork was sanded and varnished.

- The head was completely replaced: new sink, new faucet, new counter, new tubing, new through-hull for outflow, using fixtures like the original. The head brightwork was sanded and varnished.

- A new marine toilet was installed and a new holding tank was custom built by PolyFab to fit the forepeak.

- The stern companionway into the galley was replaced using a system that allows the stairs to be moved from side to side or removed completely.

- I made a folding step into the forward cabin and installed it.

- Plans were obtained from the design office for a Farrier 31 rig, a new mast step for the rig was installed and the structure between the forward cabin and the head was reinforced.

- I bought a rig (mast, boom, sails) for a Farrier 31 and had the chain plates made.

- The vents atop the galley and the head were removed and replaced with solar-powered vents.

- The outboard motor controls in the cockpit were replaced with new controls specifically for the 15-hp. outboard motor.

- The water tank from under the port side of the cockpit was removed.

- The cockpit sole was refinished with epoxy and varnish

- A new composite rudder and cassette was made by Phil’s foils.

- A new composite centreboard made was made by Phil’s foils, with incredible weight saving.

- I replaced the sole in the head and also in the forepeak. I installed a new marine toilet and water inlet in the head.

- I have bought a trailer and the main hull is now sitting on it.

What needs to be done
