2015 JLAB LEADERSHIP FORUM
JROTC UNIT CHALLENGE RESOLUTION REPORT
THE CHALLENGE: (Define the problem)
Cadet Enrollment and Retention
IMPACT(S) OF THE PROBLEM:
1.  Negative stereotypes evolve: The mission and purpose of JROTC is misunderstood
2.  Cadets are not held in the same regard as other school organizations: Cadets are looked down upon. .
CAUSE(S) OF THE PROBLEM:
1.  Misunderstanding: The mission and purpose of JROTC is misunderstood and not properly defined or publicized.
2.  Lack of respect towards the program: A different time whereby students take issue with a regimented program that may resemble a military organization: “I do not want to join the military.”
3.  No time: Students schedules do not permit another JROTC class beyond the P. E. credit. The program did not “excite” me the last time and another campus organization might.
4.  Does not fit or outside the student’s comfort zone: The program has no interest nor serves my future goals.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS/COURSES OF ACTION : (Forum developed and recommended)
1.  Consistently showcase your program: Display awards and publicize competition results and activities. Actively participate in freshmen orientation and elective course fairs. Set up freshman summer camps whereby all is invited to participate regardless if they have pre-enrolled in JROTC. Use social media and have a cadet newsletter.
2.  Competitions and demonstrations: Actively engage the teams in competitions. Take drill routines to the middle schools, high school pep rallies, and the community. Incentivize an event with awards and/or food—make it fun and require upper classmen to take leadership responsibilities to reach the students.
3.  Time Commitment: Work with students to meet their needs. Offer college assistance, study hall, and tutoring sessions. Give upper classmen the opportunity to work on college applications.
