EVENTS

Since our last newsletter, NLI held its 2013 October Practice Conference in conjunction with the Idaho Hospital Association in Coeur d’Alene. The full day conference “Creating Excellent Practice Environments” received very positive feedback. The evening before, local nurse leaders and conference attendees were treated to a reception hosted by Kootenai Medical Center providing a wonderful opportunity to network and celebrate the retirement of Carmen Brochu.

As part of our Robert Wood Johnson Foundation State Implementation Project (SIP) grant, NLI will also begin offering a week longcourse “Building aFoundation of Leadership Excellence”annually across Idaho. The pilot course will be held in Coeur d’Alene in May. In November of 2014, the first regular course will be offered in Boise, and the following year, the course will be offered in eastern Idaho. The course is targeted to nursing in leadership roles and nurses who aspire to be leaders across all healthcare settings. Deena Rauch is the project manager for this project. The course has been acquired from the Association of California Nurse Leaders and will feature Idaho nurse leader faculty.

NLI is currently preparing for our Annual June Leadership Conference in Boise on June 6th. The conference, “Leading in a Time of Change” features nationally recognized and published author Catherine Robinson Walker, as well as regionally and locally identified experts in nursing innovation. The evening before the June conference, NLI will again sponsor its third annual “Celebrate Nursing Dinner” where recognition will be given to nurses statewide who have been honored by their employers or professional organizations for their service, practice and leadership. NLI is currently accepting the names of honorees who will be featured in our program. The honoree form is available on our website, .Thank you West Valley Medical Center and Public Health District 1 for submitting your honorees already!

The updated Idaho Nursing Overview will be published through the Idaho Department of Labor this Spring. The APRN Practice andEmployer surveys are being gathered as a SIP project, and will be reported in the winter. A New Graduate Surveyis in the process of being developed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

The Education Committee has provided guidance in the development of NLI’s annual June Leadership conference, and the October IHA affiliated conference. It is currently reviewing content and speaker suggestions for October 2014. Thank you to all of you who responded to the recent conference survey. 50% of NLI members responded, which will certainly help make the October conference timing and content relevant. The Education Committee also reviews the Nurse Refresher Program, sponsored by NLI, which facilitates nurses’ re-entry into practice.

The Partnership Committee reviews legislation of interest, advises the Executive Director about membership, oversees the annual Celebrate Nursing Dinner, and processes nominations for NLI’s annualOutstanding and Aspiring Nurse Leader Awards. Requests for nominations will go out to NLI members in early April.

The Academic and Practice Committeewascreated by the Board and approved by membership in 2013. The goal of the committee is to create an opportunity to bring Idaho nursing education and practice closer together in a strategic and thoughtful manner. Gina Prindleis the education co-chair of the committee. NLI is recruiting a practice co-chair. If you are interested please contact Margaret.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

The 2014 Legislative session concluded the third week of March, becoming one of the shortest sessions in the history of the legislature. NLI actively supported legislation sponsored by the Idaho Medical Association which created a felony battery for violence against healthcare workers. Thanks to efforts of Julie Hoerner and Ellen Bencken, and all of you who contacted your legislators, the bill successfully passed.A detailed summary of the session is available on the NLI website.

NLI is planning to launch a one day Legislative Boot Camp in January. Margaret Henbest and Toni Lawson (former lobbyist for INA) will walk participants through the legislative process and effective health policy advocacy.

IDAHO NURSING ACTION COALITION

UPDATE

In response to the Institute of Medicine Report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, which was released at the end of 2010, Idaho has formed a coalition in 2011 of over 60 nurses, businesses, and other leaders to implement the report’s key recommendations. Our objective is to improve the ability of Idaho nurses to respond to the health care challenges of the future.

Idaho is part of a broader national effort called the Campaign for Action which is being led by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AARP. The Idaho Alliance of Leaders in Nursing(IALN) and the Idaho Hospital Association are co-leads of the Idaho Nursing Action Coalition(INAC). There are now 50 states who have action coalitions across the country.

INAC is focusing its work currently on four initiatives which have been funded through a grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Idaho matching funds. These projects are in their second year of the grant.

  • Expanding Opportunities for New Graduate Residencies
  • Facilitating the Transition to the Nurse Educator Role
  • Facilitating the Transition to the Nurse Leadership Role
  • Evaluating Barriers to APRN Practice and Employment

INAC is currently considering of future projects for action.
