April 26, 2006 FEMA Emergency Management Higher Education Project Activity Report

(1) DISASTERS WAITING TO HAPPEN:

O'Rourke, Morgan. "The Big Shake Up - Revisiting the Great San Francisco Earthquake." Risk Management Magazine, April 2006, pp. 30-36.

Williams, Juliet. "Schwarzenegger: Feds Should Be Worried About California Levees." Associated Press, April 25, 2006. Accessed at: http://www.pe.com/ap_news/California2/CA_Schwarzenegger_Levees_234518CA.shtml [Wonder how many more Katrinas it will take to get emergency management emphasis back on mitigation/prevention/reduction. Response measures and capabilities, and to a lesser extent, preparedness measures and capabilities, do very little or nothing to address huge future disaster losses.]

(2) DREXEL UNIVERSITY, PHILADELPHIA:

Learned today that Drexel University is planning to discontinue its Concentration in Emergency Management within the Bachelor of Science in General Studies Degree starting -- not signing up new students. I am seeking additional information.

(3) EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE COMPACT / FLORIDA EMER.MGMT. FUNDING SURCHARGE:

(5) EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN'S ENRICHMENT (EMPOWER):

Received request from the President of EMPOWER, Kelly Discount, to include the following announcement and request in the next available Activity Report:

"...we have been given the opportunity to present at the World Conference on Disaster Management in Toronto in June. The theme of the conference is "The Changing Face of Disaster Management" (see http://www.wcdm.org/). To develop this presentation, we created a survey to gather information on careers of people in the emergency management field and how their educational and professional backgrounds contribute to the success of their organization or a particular operation. Ultimately, EMPOWER hopes to identify unique roles that women play in the emergency management arena, their experiences and capabilities, and identify opportunities to help women continue to advance their careers. Please note that while our presentation will be focusing on women, we are also interested in collecting information from our male counterparts. To participate, please visit: www.empower-women.com and click on the link to the ?Emergency Management Survey?. The survey will be available from April 24 - May 8, 2006. Please use to provide feedback or for additional information or questions....

EMPOWER is a non-profit organization providing a platform for women to advance their careers in the field of emergency management through networking, mentoring, and educational opportunities. This organization was founded in 2005 and is establishing itself as a resource for women in the field of emergency management."
