Official Policy on Proficiency Exams and Portfolios in the Discipline of Science

The Division of Math/Science at Clinton Community College (CCC) will make available a list of science proficiency exams that students may successfully complete to earn science credit at CCC. Included in this list will be the proficiency exam title, the minimum passing score a student must earn to receive CCC science credit, the number of credits a student will be awarded and the course number and title that will appear on the CCC transcript. Only methods of evaluation on the list of approved proficiency exams will be honored by the CCC Math/Science Division due to their known reliability/validity and increased transferability. This policy encompasses all CCC science courses listed in the table below.

The following exams are the only exams approved by the Math/Science Division to be used in issuing Life Experience Credit for courses housed in the Math/Science Division. These are all courses with a BIO, CHE or PHY prefix.

AP – Advanced Placement – College Boards

CLEP – College Level Examination Program – College Boards

DSST - Dantes

11/27/2006.

My notes as per our discussions:

1. We agreed that this be removed:

CLEP / Natural Sciences / *General Science elective / 6 / 420-500

2. Janice agreed to check on the ACS exam and our acceptable score of 75 percentile or above (AP, CLEP etc acceptable scores are the score equivalent to a “C”).

3. We did not get to discuss awarding credit for the DSST (Dantes) exams. They are a testing service (similar to CLEP) that does proficiency exams. The Registrar currently gives credit for Dantes exams although Cheryl says she does not see them often and transfers them as elective credit.

They have exams in:

·  Physical Geology

·  Principles of Physical Science I

·  Environment and Humanity: The Race to Save the Planet

·  Astronomy

Do we want to approve these courses as transferring as elective credit only or as GEL101, PHY100, ENV101 and MET100 respectively?
