APPROVAL OF ADDITION OF KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADES

FOR WESTONTECHNICALACADEMY

Recommendation

Introduction: WestonTechnicalAcademy(“Academy”) submitted a resolution from its Board of Directors approving the addition of kindergarten through fifth grades. The original Agreement to Organize and Administer a Public School Academy, which was approved by Oakland University in 1998, recognizes the seventh through twelfth grades, and the Board of Trustees subsequently approved the addition of the sixth grade on October 4, 2000. OaklandUniversity’s Office of Public School Academies and Urban Partnerships (“PSA Office”) has reviewed and approved the Academy’s proposed kindergarten through fifth grade curriculums, and have found they are consistent with the Michigan Department of Education Curriculum Framework. The PSA Office is recommending the Academy be granted approval to add kindergarten through fifth grades to the Academy’s curriculum.

Recommendation

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees approved the original Agreement for Weston Technical Academy to Organize and Administer a Public School Academyon August 1, 1998; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees approved the addition of the sixth grade to WestonTechnicalAcademy on October 4, 2000; and

WHEREAS, the kindergarten through fifth grade curriculums for theAcademy is in accordance with Michigan Department of Education Curriculum Framework; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Board of Trustees approves WestonTechnicalAcademy’s resolution to add kindergarten through fifth grades to the Academy’s curriculum; and,

be it further

RESOLVED, that the original Agreement for Weston Technical Academy to Organize and Administer a Public School Academy be amendedto include the addition of kindergarten through fifth grades; and, be it further

RESOLVED, that the Amended Agreement for Weston Technical Academy shall be reviewed and approved by the Office of the General Counsel prior to execution and must be in compliance with the law and University policies and regulations and shall conform to the legal standards and policies of the Board of Trustees.

Previous Board Action: On October 5, 1995, the Board of Trustees approved OaklandUniversity’s Policy on Public School Academies. On August 1, 1998, the Board of Trustees approved WestonTechnicalAcademy’s Agreement to Organize and Administer a PublicSchoolAcademy. On October 4, 2000, the Board of Trustees approved the addition of sixth grade to the Academy.

Educational Implications: There are no educational implications for OaklandUniversityassociated with this resolution.

Budgetary Implications: OaklandUniversity receives three percent (3%) of the state school funding received by the Academy as an administrative fee. The amount of the administrative fee will increase proportionally with the addition of kindergarten through fifth grade students.

Personnel Implications: There are no personnel implications for OaklandUniversityassociated with this resolution.
