Interim Report: January 23, 2015

United Way of India (UWI) through its implementing agency Sustainable Ecology and Environment Development Society (SEEDS) have been able to race against time and achieve the mammoth task of completion of construction of 100 Transient shelters in 7 villages of Pulwama District of Jammu and Kashmir state with support received fromdonors under the Hum Hain - Umeede Kashmirand other Corporate Partners of United Way of India.

Approach and Beneficiary Identification Process

The approach adoptedby United Way of India, was to ensure all affected families in the village benefitted from the program. After close consultation with the District Administration, Village Development Committee and multiple visits for need assessment and verification;100 needy families from 7 villages in Pulwama Districtwere identified to be supported through this intervention. A stringent process for identification of the neediest families (only those severelyaffected during the floods) was carried out to identify the most destitute families in dire need, who werelater shortlisted and provided with a fully complete transient shelter unit of 264 sq. ft. (considering standards prescribed by humanitarian guidelines for an average family of 7).

Village Name / Number of families supported
Mohanviji / 22
Marvel / 12
Satergund / 8
Kakapora / 4
Khadarmuh / 22
Total / 68

Through the support received from supporters through Hum HainUmmeed E Kashmir, a total of 68 families were given complete transient shelter (along with temporary toilet facility for families who had the requirement) in 5 villages in Pulwama District.

Moving into the new homes

On Dec. 29, 2014,Sajad Ahmad Khan- District Collector of Puwalma; Pradeep Hejmadi, Business Head - ZEE TV; Jayanti Shukla, Executive Director - United Way of India; Dr. Manu Gupta, Executive Director - SEEDS; and Ghulam Mohammed Malik -Pradhan Marvell Village came together and handed over the newly constructed shelters to the flood victims of Marvell village.

Community Participation

Both UWI and SEEDS ensured active community participation throughout the process of construction which contributed towards faster achievements of the project targets. Following the shelter construction process, beneficiary families were also encouraged to construct walls around their shelters mainly by using the salvageable materials from their damaged houses. This has ensured the sense of ownership among the beneficiary families towards the shelters.

Glimpse of the Transient Shelter

Despite challenges and obstacles, UWI and its implementing partner SEEDS was able meet the shelter needs of the affected families in time and before the weather deteriorated, and hence the overall purpose and the objective of the intervention was met. Currently, the UWI team is undertaking detailed need assessments through collaboration with local administration, NGO partners and local community to understand their long-term rehabilitation and recovery needs.

We thank all the partners involved with Hum Hain - Umeed E Kashmir and all donors who supported the campaign with their generous contributions. United Way of India is committed to continue its efforts towards rebuilding the lives of flood affected communities in Jammu and Kashmir.
