APPOINTMENT OF A

HEAD OF BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISE

For September 2011

Main Scale, London fringe TLR 2B

Thank you for your interest in this post. We have included in this booklet general information about the school and more specific details that are relevant to the role of Head of Business and Enterprise. We hope there is sufficient background to encourage you to make an application but Mrs Carnegie, Head of Social Science, can be contacted at the school to answer any questions that may remain.

AN INTRODUCTION TO ROSEBERY

Rosebery (named after the Earl of Rosebery) is a girls’ 11-18 Foundation School situated close to the centre of Epsom, the only all female state school in Surrey. The number on roll is 1,485 with a Sixth Form of 300. Students have a wide range of backgrounds and come to us from about thirty primary or junior schools, covering the whole of Epsom and Ewell. In September 2005 we gained specialist status in Mathematics and Computing and were awarded High Performing Specialist Status in 2008. Exam results in 2010 were 87.5% A*-C and 79% including including English and Maths.

Our students are eager to learn and anxious to do well. Not surprisingly they become involved in all the opportunities open to them in and out of lessons. We also enjoy the strong support of parents, an important factor in maintaining high standards. Students’ links with the community, good behaviour and excellent examination results contribute to the school’s popularity and oversubscription.

ETHOS

Fundamental to the ethos of Rosebery is that all students are able to do well, whatever their starting point. They are encouraged to share their talents and enthusiasms, to become involved and to make the greatest use of their abilities in all that they do. We value the efforts and achievements of every girl and strive to provide quality in all aspects of life at the school.

Girls are invited to join clubs and activities that add breadth and depth to their experiences in class. We are known well beyond county borders for music, have our own flourishing 'rep theatre', have won national awards for engineering projects, have gained the Gold Arts Mark award and take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. There is enrichment for everyone.

STAFF

Our strong team of over 90 highly qualified teachers brings extensive and varied experience covering the whole age and ability range. There is a shared commitment to high standards of learning, discipline and care for the personal well-being of each girl. We are fortunate to have the support of 60 administrative and technical staff who are equally committed to ensuring our students make the most of their time at Rosebery.

Professional development is essential for teaching and support staff. To this end care is taken to ensure all have access to training and new ideas. We are often recommended as a school where newly qualified teachers have a secure and supportive environment in which to practise and extend their teaching skills. We also welcome a large number of trainee teachers each year, since those embarking on their teaching career receive expert guidance and a rewarding experience.

A Performance Management programme is well established for all our staff. We were very pleased to be re-designated an Investor in People organisation in June 2009.

STANDARDS AT ROSEBERY

We had our third OFSTED inspection in September 2007. The inspection report comments that ‘students behave in an exemplary fashion in lessons and around the school‘, and ‘the care, guidance and support provided by the school are outstanding’. It notes that ‘consistently good teaching is enhanced by teachers’ good subject knowledge, professionalism and commitment’. In their letter to the students, the inspectors wrote ‘you achieve outstanding examination results in Year 9, Year 11 and in the Sixth Form.’

We are delighted to be considered ‘a good and very effective school with a number of outstanding features’. Naturally we aim to build on these firm foundations and provide an even better education for the girls who come to Rosebery.

THE SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

The Social Science Department consists of six subject areas, namely: Business Studies and Economics, Health and Social Care, Sociology, Law, Psychology and Religious Studies. Religious Studies is the only subject taught at Key Stage 3 for one hour a week. Business Studies, Health and Social Care (double award), Sociology and Religious Studies are all offered and taught at Key Stage 4 with a range of 2 – 4 groups in each subject. Most students study at least one social science subject at Key Stage 4 and many have the opportunity to study two or three. The Social Science Department is committed to equal opportunities thus all subjects are offered to choose as an option.

‘AS’ and ‘A’ level is offered in all six subjects and, to date, there has been a healthy uptake in both Years 12 and 13.

To meet the statutory requirement, Religious Studies is taught as ‘Core RS’ for an hour once a fortnight. Aspects of the OCR short course are broadly followed.

Social Sciences is a vital area of the curriculum which studies people and their interaction with their environment in its spatial, historic, economic, spiritual and moral aspects. Further to this, emphasis is placed on the balance between rights and responsibilities within the existing legal framework. It is hoped that pupils will develop their respect for the world in which we live and strengthen their awareness of people and their beliefs. It is through knowledge, understanding and the study of attitudes, beliefs and values that students can obtain an academic basis for an enquiring mind and develop both spiritually and morally.

THE POST OF HEAD OF BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISE

Within the Business Studies Department, there are currently two members of staff, Mrs R Yeo, the current Head of Department, and Mrs M Harris. All the teachers work closely together teaching Business Studies from Year 10 to Year 13 and Business Studies and Economics, Travel and Tourism to A level standard. The successful candidate would be expected to teach two out of three subjects. Expectations of students are high and examination results are excellent, with pass rates consistently being above the national and school average. In 2010 pass rate at GCSE Business Studies was 99%, A* - C pass rate was 83%. APS at both AS and A2 in 2010 exceeded the average ALIS prediction, with 50% of students achieving grades A or B at AS and A2. In AS Economics, 85% of students achieved A or B grades. This is the first cohort at Rosebery which will sit the A2 exams this year.

Our students work hard and want to do well. This is a period of growth and change for the Department with the recent introduction of new subjects and specifications namely Economics and Travel and Tourism. We aim to appoint an excellent classroom teacher with the ability to lead the department to ensure continued success.

Curriculum

KS4 – GCSE: In Years 10 and 11 students have five lessons a fortnight in Business Studies. There are currently three classes in both Year 10 and in Year 11 with 140 students at KS4.

Rationale – Enterprise Education

Every Child Matters places a greater responsibility on schools than ever before to ensure students are properly prepared for the world of work which, in turn, will contribute to long term economic well-being. Legislation requires schools to provide a curriculum that includes enterprise and financial capability as well as work experience and related activities.

The aim of this post is to lead and co-ordinate activities that

·  add to students’ awareness of the skills they need for the workplace

·  provide opportunities for girls to develop their interpersonal, leadership and entrepreneurial skills

·  help girls to understand the various factors that contribute to a successful business

·  build students’ confidence

·  contribute to the financial capability of all students

and, to assist the above, to

·  forge links with business, industry and commerce

·  keep abreast of initiatives that could be introduced in pursuit of the aim

·  audit the curriculum to identify gaps in WR / enterprise provision

·  work with HoDs / HoHs to extend opportunities to offer WR activities

·  promote an enterprising culture throughout the school

There is a good deal in place already. We have strong links with the Epsom and Ewell Education Business Partnership (E&E EBP), support from local Rotary Clubs, cross-curricular days, after school activities and Young Enterprise in the Sixth Form.

Specific links include

·  Represent the school at EBP meetings (once a term)

·  Specific responsibility for organising the Rotary Interview Day for Year 10

·  Specific responsibility for organising Year 10 Enterprise Days

·  Support Year 10 PDE coordinator delivering Enterprise and WRL through the PDE programme

FORM TUTOR

All teachers at Rosebery are also class tutors, the pastoral care and monitoring of progress of students being an essential part of the teacher's role.
