2012-13 Merit Scholarships for High School Students
DelawareCountyChristianSchool provides Merit Scholarships – Templeton Scholars & Witherspoon Scholars -- for students entering grades 9-12 to encourage academically talented students.These scholarships are awarded on a year-to-year basis.Students may choose to apply for both scholarships, but can onlybe awarded one scholarship per academic year.A student who receives a scholarship for the advancing year is not guaranteed a scholarship for the following year. Students must apply on an annual basis for Merit Scholarships.
Templeton Scholars
Drs. John and Josephine Templeton provide funding each year for the Templeton Scholars.Dr. John M. Templeton was a prominent surgeon at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia beforebecoming president of the John Templeton Foundation.Dr. Josephine Templeton also served on the staff of Children’s Hospital for many years.
Merit Scholarship Terms: Amount - $1,500 each. Scholarships awarded on a year-by-year basis to a total of 16 students (current and new students). Applications for students currently attending DC must be received by Wednesday, March 28, 2012 to be considered. Applications for prospective students will be considered at the time of their Admissions process.
Purpose: The Templetons would like to encourage capable young Christian men and women to consider service to the Lord through medical and scientific careers.
Eligibility:A maximum of four individual scholarships per high school class – 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th. Students currently attending DC as well as those students making application to enroll in DC for the 2012-2013 academic school year may apply.
Criteria:Academic Aptitude (students who are leaning toward further academic studies related to a career in science may be given preference in the Templeton Scholarship process), Proven Academic Performance (required G.P.A. of 4.2 on a weighted 5.0 scale or a cumulative numeric average of 95/100), Christian Commitment (evidenced in personal expression as well as school, church and community involvement)

How does your faith affect 1) the way you view science and math, and 2) your ability to honor and serve God in these areas?(You may also incorporate current activities in your essay as evidence of Christian commitment or attach a separate listing of your activities.)

Witherspoon Scholars
This merit scholarship is named after John Witherspoon, the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence. Witherspoonwas a scholar, active Christian, and public servant. Witherspoon (a descendant of reformation leaderJohn Knox) was a Scottish pastor who moved to New Jersey to become the President of Princeton University. He represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress, helped draft the Articles of Confederation,and served several terms in the New Jersey Legislature. Witherspoon embodied Christian scholarship, leadership, and service to Jesus Christ and to his country.
Merit Scholarship Terms: Amount - $1,500 to $2,500 each. Scholarships awarded on a year-by-year basis to 16 students (current and new students). Applications for students currently attending DC must be received by Wednesday, March 28, 2012 to be considered. Applications for prospective students will be considered at the time of their Admissions process.
Purpose: Provided by an Anonymous Donor to DC to encourage students to develop their unique design through rigorous academic achievement to equip them to become the transformational leaders of their generation.
Eligibility:A maximum of four individual scholarships per high school class – 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th. Students currently attending DC as well as those students making application to enroll in DC for the 2012-2013school year may apply.

Students currently in 8th Grade should answer this question:
John Witherspoon was an evangelical Christian. Discuss and evaluate the manner in which his religious faith impacted his political decisions in two significant areas. Comment as well on how this approach can also serve as a model for the way Christians can serve in the American political system.
Students currently in 9th -- 11th Grade should answer this question:
Describe and analyze two significant political contributions John Witherspoon made to the founding documents of the United States government. Relate these contributions to the political benefits Americansshare today.

Application Requirements
Application Requirements:Current DC High School students desiring to apply for a Merit Scholarship should check your G.P.A. on your Naviance Account (Log-in to your Naviance account, click on the ABOUT ME tab, at the bottom under Official Things click on “profile”, you will see your weighted 5.0 GPA at the bottom of that page.) or confirm your G.P.A. with Mrs. Janet Smyth in the HS Guidance Office at the start of your application process. (Mrs. Smyth will attach your transcript to your application before it is submitted to the Merit Scholarship Selection Committee.) Current DC 8th Grade students should confirm your N.G.A. with Mrs. Gwen Peters in the MS Office at the start of your application process. Students applying for Merit Scholarships who are not currently enrolled in DC must submit an official transcript and most recent report card from your school’s Guidance Office. These should be attached to your application (this sheet).
Deadline: Applications must besubmitted to the DC High School Guidance Office by Wednesday, March 28, 2012to be considered by the Merit Scholarship Selection Committee for the 2012-2013 Academic Year. Scholarship selections will be announced in the Spring. Students may apply for one or both scholarships, but may only receive one per academic year.
