Applied Knowledge

Assessment

In this Applied Knowledge Assessment, you will practice concepts from this unit. You will focus on area and surface area. You can use these math concepts to solve many real world problem situations. Let’s go!

Birthday Bliss

This assessment is worth 75 points. Be sure to do all of your work on this sheet and submit one document for full credit.

  1. You are wrapping a present for a birthday party. The box has a length of 12 ft., a width of 6 ft., and a depth of 3 ft.
  1. Draw a picture to model this situation and label the dimensions.
  1. Determine the least amount of wrapping paper that would be needed to cover the gift. Show all work and provide proper units with your solution.
  1. You are creating a cone-shaped hat for a kid’s costume. You measure the circumference of the child’s head and find it to be 20.5 inches.
  1. Determine the radius of the hat.
  1. You want the hat to have a slant height of 8 inches. Draw an image that models this situation and include all of the measurements you know.
  1. How much material would you need to make the hat? Your answer should be in square inches.
  1. For this question, we will find the surface area of a cylinder, using an object from your kitchen.
  1. Locate a canned good from your kitchen. Some examples include a can of soup, a can of vegetables, or a can of fruit. Describe the type of can that you are using.
  1. Draw a picture of your canned good. Measure the height of the can and the diameter of the top surface. Label the measurements on your picture.
  1. Calculate the surface area of the canned good. Show all of your work. Round your answer to the nearest whole number.
  1. For this question, we will use our knowledge of finding areas of sectors and triangles to find the area of the pizza crust (the segment).
  1. Find the area of the entire slice of pizza. Since the slice of pizza is part of a whole pie, let’s think of the pizza as a sector of a circle. Calculate the area. Be sure to show all of you work.

  1. Find the area of the pizza without the crust. We can use our knowledge of triangles for this step. Given that the height of the triangle is 5.5 in. and the base of the triangle is 5 in., calculate the area. Show all of you work.
  1. Using the calculations from Parts A and B, calculate the area of the pizza crust (or segment). You may refer to Lesson 6 for a refresher on how to calculate the area of a segment of a circle. Show all of your work.

Directions for Inserting an Image into a Word Document:

  1. Scan your document(s) and save it (them) as a .jpg file. Save the images using file names that relate to the assignment.
  1. Open the Word document.
  1. On the first line of the Word document, please type the following:

“Last Name_First Name_Assignment Name”

(Example: Doe_Jane_U1L1_AKA)

  1. Save the file with a file name such as “Last Name_First Name_Assignment Name.”
  2. Place your cursor in the Word file where you want to insert the image.
  3. From the top tab, select the Insert option.

  1. Select “Picture.”
  1. Locate the file on your desktop. Click on the file and click “Insert.” The image will then be inserted into your document.

  1. The image will now be inserted into your file. It will look something like this:

Doe_Jane_U1L1_AKA

See the sample Applied Knowledge Assessment below.

*Note: To insert another image, simply place the cursor at the end of the image and press “Enter.” You are now ready to repeat the process until you have loaded all of your images for the assignment into one Word document!
