Chapter Excellence Awards

2015Application Packet

Applications are due electronically to by 5 PM on January 30,2016.

The 2015 Chapter Excellence Awards will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016. The Chapter Excellence Awards were founded in 1995 to honor the excellent work of fraternities and sororities in the pursuit of their founding principles. Chapters are recognized for their accomplishments over the course of an entire calendar year in order to show continuity and consistency among the organizations and to provide more meaningful rewards for the recipients.

The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Community Involvement designates a committee to review and select award recipients. The committee will consider only activitiesperformed in the 2015 calendar year (Spring2015 and Fall 2015 semesters).The list below outlines the awards and the source for evaluation:

All chapters are automatically considered for the awards in the Program Evaluation Forms, Grade Reports, and Fire Safety Inspection Results categories.

Chapters and/or individuals must apply to be considered for the awards in the Applications category. Applying for additional awards is completely optional and at the discretion of the chapter and/or individual.

Please use the application template provided to apply and submit a single file with all of your applications. You will find a template for the Most Camps Involvement Award, Bettie Ann Everett Award for Most Community Service, and a generic template for all other awards in the document provided.

Optional Awards for Individuals

Outstanding Faculty/UNC Advisor

Award to recognize the UNC faculty or UNC staff member who has reached out beyond the classroom to serve as a true supporter of the Greek community at Carolina.

  1. Please briefly list the contributions and accomplishments the nominee has made to the chapter.
  2. Please describe how the advisor is involved with the chapter and ways in which he/she motivates the chapter.
  3. What characteristics make the advisor a mentor for the chapter? How does the advisor serve as a role model?
  4. Please rank this nominee on the following criteria from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest):
  • Availability to the chapter membership
  • Quality of Guidance/Resources
  • Presence at chapter events/meetings
  • Approachability

Outstanding Alumni/Alumnae Advisor

Award to recognize the alumnus/alumnae advisor who has served as a role model and dedicated his/her time and efforts to helping the chapter.

  1. Please briefly list the contributions and accomplishments the nominee has made to the chapter.
  2. Please describe how the advisor is involved with the chapter and ways in which he/she motivates the chapter.
  3. What characteristics make the advisor a mentor for the chapter? How does the advisor serve as a role model?
  4. Please rank this nominee on the following criteria from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest):
  • Availability to the chapter membership
  • Quality of Guidance/Resources
  • Presence at chapter events/meetings

Unsung Greek Leader

Awarded to a student who consistently gives their “all” to their chapter, often times going above and beyond the call of duty for his/her position or role. Consideration for recognition is for a student who does not hold a significant leadership position in their chapter, demonstrates a strong commitment to the organization, positively influences the organization from behind the scenes, has a positive attitude toward UNC-Chapel Hill and his/her fraternity/sorority, and completes tasks and duties with a high level of quality.

  1. Please provide a description of the activities in which the candidate has been involved.
  2. Describe his/her commitment and contribution to the organization.
  3. Describe the quality of his/her overall performance and leadership.

Outstanding Chapter President

Presented to the president who has excelled in the leadership, development, and improvement of their chapter; this individual has gone above and beyond their call of duty in improving him/herself as a leader and enhancing the overall chapter structure and organization.

  1. Please list all positions the nominee has held in his/her chapter and with the IFC/Panhellenic/NPHC/GAC council and the terms of each office.
  2. Please briefly list the accomplishments and work the nominee has done with his/her chapter during his/her presidency.
  3. What characteristics does the nominee possess that makes him/her a good leader?
  4. Briefly describe the nominee’s leadership style. What has this person done to motivate members and how did he/she accomplish this?
  5. What was a major challenge this leader’s particular organization (chapter or council) faced, and how did he/she effectively address and overcome the challenge?

Outstanding Greek Leader

Presented to Greek leader who has excelled beyond their peers in all areas of Greek life including scholarship, service, social involvement, unity, dedication, leadership, and overall improvement of the Greek community at UNC-Chapel Hill; this student leader is considered a role model in fraternity and sorority life and best represents the ideals of what it means to be Greek.This award is the highest honor bestowed on a member of the Greek community.

  1. Please list all positions the nominee has held in his/her chapter and with the IFC/Panhellenic/NPHC/GAC council and the terms of each office.
  2. Please briefly list all contributions and accomplishments the nominee has made to the overall UNC-Chapel Hill Greek community.
  3. What characteristics does the nominee possess that makes him/her a good leader?
  4. Briefly describe the nominee’s leadership style. Why and how does this person serve as a role model for Greek life at Carolina?

Optional Chapter Programming and Development Awards

Most Campus Involvement

Award to recognizeone chapter from each council with the most involvement at UNC outside of their fraternity or sorority.

  1. Complete the table provided in the application template on page 2 for consideration.
  2. Provide a one-two paragraph description of your how the members of your chapter are involved outside of the fraternity and sorority community.

Bettie Ann Everett Award for Most Community Service

Award to recognize one chapter from each council with the most community service hours, on a per member basis.Complete the table provided in the application template on page 3 for consideration.

Leading with Values

Award presented to the chapter who demonstrates values based leadership as the foundation of their chapter and educational programs.

  1. Describe one on-going program your chapter has implemented that reflects the values your organization upholds.
  2. Briefly describe up to 3 additional programs that you would like to highlight regarding values, including their goals and effect on chapter membership.

Chapter of the Year

Award presented to one chapter per council who demonstrated the highest accomplishments, evaluated based on GPA, campus involvement, commitment to Greek Unity, excellence in philanthropy and/or service, strong sisterhood or brotherhood, and upholding standards of their national organization and council. The following will serve as indicators of excellence for this honor.

  • Maintains compliance with OFSL Standards of Excellence and Academic Policies
  • Demonstrates a high level of involvement and presence on campus
  • Promotes overall Greek unity
  • Achieves excellence in philanthropy and/or service
  • Upholds a strong sense of sisterhood or brotherhood
  • Demonstrates a commitment to upholding the standards of its national organization, its council, and the University

Chapters may not apply if they faced or are facing judicial action by their chapter’s national organization, council, or the University in 2015.

Chapter of the Year Application Questions:

  1. How is the chapter involved with the Carolina Community at large?
  2. What does the chapter do to promote Greek Unity?
  3. How has the chapter excelled in the areas of service and/or philanthropy, brotherhood/sisterhood, academic excellence, and leadership development?
  4. Is there anything else you would like to share about the chapter as it pertains to this award?
