APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED FOR

THE 2017-18 ETHNIC STUDIES PUKSTA FELLOWS PROGRAM

The Department of Ethnic Studies is now accepting applications for our annual Ethnic Studies Puksta Fellows, a $2,000 award each for five Ethnic Studies majors. Our program involves an innovative partnership with the Puksta Foundation, a Denver-based organization committed to working for social justice and training civic leaders for the 21st Century.The one-age application is due before Wednesday, March 1st to

HOW DOES IT WORK?Puksta Fellows have $1,000 applied to their fall tuition bill, and $1,000 applied to their spring tuition bill, for a total award of $2,000. Puksta Fellows must complete three ETST courses that are required for the ETST major during the fall 2017-18 academic year. These three courses are:

  1. In the fall, you will complete ETST 4000 Research Methods in Ethnic Studies, 3 credits, taught as a hybrid course.

2. Either fall or spring semester, you will complete ETST 3939 Internship. 3 credits. Your internship is conducted with the non-profit of your choice. Contact Kelli Rapplean, Internship Advisor, Coordinator Experiential Learning Center

  1. In spring, you will complete ETST 4960 Senior Seminar, 3 credits, an online course.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be an enrolled Ethnic Studies major, junior or senior year of study preferred.
  2. Overall GPA of 3.0
  3. Complete the 3 ETST required courses listed above.

Required Activitieswill include:

1. Attendance at our fall annual Ethnic Studies Open House, a luncheon in your honor.

2. There are twoPuksta retreats for fellows from throughout Colorado, one in fall and one in spring.

3. A presentation on ETST panel at the April UCD Undergraduate Research SymposiumRaCAS.

4.There are monthly meetings (group lunch meeting, individual appointments with faculty sponsor Dr. Martinez, and a lunch with all Puksta scholars on campus).

WHAT IS IT? A Puksta Fellow is an elite title. The goal of our program is to enable Puksta Fellows to graduate with stellar leadership skills, professional experience, outstanding academic credentials, and intimate knowledge of social justice leadership. Recent ETST Puksta Fellows have completed projects working as tutors in Denver Public Schools, as college mentors, and in non-profits serving underrepresented youth, as advocates for equity in education in African American, Asian American and Latino/a communities, and as advocates to address health disparities.

OUR PARTNERS:Puksta Fellows throughout the state of Colorado include from The University of Colorado Denver, Colorado State University, the University of Denver, the University of Colorado Boulder, and Metro State University. Student retreats will create remarkable opportunities for networking with the state’s future leaders.

TO APPLY: To be selected as an ETSTPuksta Fellow, you must be an Ethnic Studies major, must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, and preferably be in your Junior or Senior year of study. The application consists of a 1-2 page letter of intent describing your social justice goals and experiences.Application materials must be received by faculty sponsor Dr. Martinez y email, before Wednesday, March 1st at noon.
