Place your name and photo inside the basketso people know who put it together. If you receive large items like furniture make sure they are marked with your name also.
  • Be as creative as possible with your basket. Think about what your area has to offer and talk to the local merchants and manufacturers about unique items.

Thank you in advance for your forethought for making your basket. Please bring the attached form to check-in with your basket.

Volunteering for Life

I never thought about becoming a volunteer until someone asked me. That’s all it took…someone asking. Since that first effort on my part, I have become an avid volunteer for many different agencies, organizations, and individuals in my community. Of the 65 million Americans who volunteer each year, 29 percent are teens. My platform focuses on increasing the number of teens and young people who volunteer. As Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen, I will encourage other teens to volunteer their time and hands to those who are in need within their own communities. Through the strength of the crown and the publicity that accompanies it, my own enthusiasm and personal experience will be much more effective when asking people to give of themselves. Community service is a key part of the Miss North Carolina program; I will make it the focus of my year of service.

To begin, I will visit schools and clubs offering encouragement and showing how my own efforts have helped make a difference. Perhaps my work in 135 different volunteer activities and input of almost 600 hours will inspire other teens to do the same. I have found 24 different organizations in my area that need the help of volunteers, so I know teens can find groups in their own neighborhoods and towns that need a helping hand. Most teens are anxious to help, but they do not know how to make a connection. As Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen, I will create a clear path to connect volunteers with organizations. A well designed website will assist youth in identifying their personal skills, interests and strengths for volunteering. Every type and degree of skill can be utilized. In addition, the website will provide information on how to identify and contact organizations. Many communities have formal programs; North Carolina participates in state and national programs such as; Learn and Serve America, Volunteer Match and The Presidents Volunteer Service Program that would be linked to the website.

President Bush suggests that each American volunteers 4000 hours over a lifetime. This year I received the President’s Gold Service Medal. The estimated dollar value of volunteer time in North Carolina is $15.52 per hour. Imagine how much more each organization or group could do if every person offered his or her services as a volunteer. The effect would be amazing! Most people do not even realize they would enjoy volunteering. Volunteering creates a sense of belonging in the community; a person can feel like they have “made a difference.” For the organization, valuable services are performed at “no cost” which benefits both the organization and the country. The problems of the world are never too big: “You can eat an elephant one bite at a time.” We can solve the world’s problems, one effort at a time.

Unfortunately, the thought of volunteering does not cross the minds of many teens because of the demands of school and extracurricular activities. Teens have an endless supply of energy and lots of talent and imagination that can be used in the area of volunteerism. Perhaps all teens need is someone to ask them to volunteer. My efforts have resulted in helping raise over $85,000 and I am just 15 years old. I’m not a superstar. I’m not a miracle worker. I am a 15 year old girl who offers to help those who need it. Volunteering makes me feel good. I want to inspire others to do the same. Some will respond to a challenge; some will respond to an inspirational story or to a tearful situation. Most people will respond simply because they are asked. I am just the girl to do the asking!
