Youth Advisory Council
of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation
You can help make our community great! If you’re a senior at a public or private high school in the Sioux Falls area, you have a unique opportunity to learn how philanthropy works to improve the lives of children and youth in our area.
What is the Youth Advisory Council?
The Youth Advisory Council, now in its 17th year, is a program of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. YAC brings high school leaders together to learn about issues affecting children and youth and how philanthropists work to address those needs and opportunities.
As a member of YAC, you and a team of up to 15 peers will experience philanthropy hands on. Over the years, YAC has awarded 120 grants worth over $270,000 to youth-serving organizations.
What do members do?
YAC members meet four times from October to December. At those meetings, you’ll
- Learn about community philanthropy.
- Discuss the needs of children and youth, and decide what types of programs you’d like to support.
- Learn about fundraising strategies.
- Receive, evaluate, and discuss grant applications.
- Reach agreement on awards.
- Meet with leaders of local nonprofits to learn more about the programs you’ve funded.
How will being a member of YAC benefit you?
By becoming a member of YAC, you will
- Help make a difference to children and youth in the Sioux Falls area.
- Develop leadership and teamwork skills.
- Learn about the needs of others in our community.
- Network with other teen leaders.
What is Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation?
SFACF connects donors with means in Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, and McCook counties to the organizations that dream and strive to meet local needs.
SFACF is a place where caring people can make contributions that are used to support a vast range of good works. The gifts our donors make are not spent, but placed in permanent charitable funds. Every year, a portion of each fund is used to make grants to nonprofits that provide important services to the community.
