*CALL TO WORSHIPAnne Stroud

As we live within this season of Advent, we long for peace–peace within us, peace among us.

O Lord, hear our prayers for peace.

Not a peace that comes from filling ourselves with Christmas goodies,

but a peace that comes from filling ourselves with the word of God.

Not a peace that comes from adorning our homes with decorations,

but a peace that comes from adorning ourselves with the light of Christ.

Not a peace that comes from a right relationship with the economy,

but a peace that comes from a right relationship with God and with each other.

Come to us God.

Come and bring us your peace.

*HYMN 103“Come Now, O Prince of Peace”O-SO-SO

(All children are invited to come forward during the final verse.)

Scripture: Luke 1: 76-79

Prayer

God of hope, Prince of Peace,

You speak peace into the world

In the Way of the Christ child.

Help us embody your peace

And live as peacemakers

That we may be called children of God

God of hope, God of peace,

Into our darkness come.

COME AS A CHILDBarb Purvis

PRAYERSusan Sutherland

O God beyond time, we are an impatient people.

As the days grow shorter and the darkness longer,

teach us to wait with faithful expectation.

In this time of worship,

open our eyes and hearts to the Advent blessings in our midst.

May every day be a day of gratitude for your compassion and grace.

Through the guidance of your Spirit,

lead each one of us in the pathways that make for peace.

In the name of Emmanuel, God with Us, we pray. Amen.

ANTHEM“Amid the Cold of Winter”arr. Bret Rhoades

Incorporating In the Bleak MidwinterLo, How a Rose E’er Blooming

Exaltation! – Donna Heer, accompanist

In the bleak mid-winter, frosty wind made moan,

Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone.

Snow had fallen, snow on snow,

in the bleak mid-winter, long time ago.

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!

Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.

It came, a blossom bright, amid the cold of winter,

when half-spent was the night.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;

If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;

Yes, what can I give him? I would give my heart.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING & HOLY COMMUNION

The Invitation

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give God our thanks and praise.

The Prayer of Thanksgiving and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

“This is the cup of hope poured out for you.”
