APPLICATION FOR MUSIC ELECTIVE PROGRAMME (MEP) (2016)

INTRODUCTION

1Secondary 1 Express students in non-MEP/EMP schools can now apply for the four-year secondary Music Elective Programme (MEP) at select MEP centres from2016.

MEP Curriculum

2TheMEPseeksto provide academically able and musically talented students the opportunity for an in-depth study of music. It also aims to develop well-rounded leaders who are supportive of the arts.

3Thesyllabuscoversarangeofmusicalstylesfrom WesternandAsianmusic traditions.Students will participate in Composing, Listening and Performing activities and develop an appreciation of the cultural diversity in music. At the end of the four-year programme, students will sit for Higher Music at O-Level, which can be used in lieu of a Humanities subject for admission to Junior Colleges.

4Lessons will be conducted each weekatoneofthefollowingcentres from Term 2 Week 1.Allcentrestakeinstudentsofbothgenders.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

5Prior to applying, students will need to ensure that their school schedules and commitment allow for that of the MEP. Students who are selected and admitted into the MEP will need to commit to the programme for 4 years, as withdrawal from the MEP requires the approval of Arts Education Branch, MOE.

6Students who apply for the Selection Exercise for the MEP should have the following minimum qualifications:

  • EITHER apassin Grade ThreePracticaland Theory or PracticalMusicianship examinationsfrom theAssociatedBoardoftheRoyalSchoolsofMusic (ABRSM),ortheequivalentstandardfromotherexaminationboards(e.g.TrinityCollegeof London;YamahaGradeExamination System).
  • OR in the absence of the qualifications stated above, at least three years of performance experience on a solo instrument or voice (e.g. Music CCAs, community ensembles).

5Students are to submit the attached application form (Annex B2) and supporting certificates (if any) to their teacher-in-charge by Friday, 15 January 2016. Late applications will not be accepted.

6All students have to takeaSelection Exerciseon 30 January 2016 comprising the following:

a)Music Theory – Questions will be based on the identification of scales & key signatures, time signatures, transposition, notation, rhythm, as well as terms and signs.

b)Musical Perception –Studentswill listen to short musical extracts, taken from both Western and non-Western musical traditions, and complete a series of short-answer questions.

7Shortlisted students from this first phase will be notified to attend a practical audition and interview. Students will be required to perform two contrasting solopieceson an instrument (e.g. piano, rebab, erhu, and sitar) or voice, lasting no longer than 5 minutes in total.

8Successfulapplicantswill be notified from early March, and willattend a two-hour MEPclass each weekatoneofthecentres from Term 2 Week 1.The application and selection timeline is as follows:
