Applying for an extension of the right to study at the Faculty of Arts

Only apply for an extension of the right to study if you actually intend to complete studies; the Faculty monitors study progress over extension periods. Your study progress is significant if you choose to reapply for an extension.

If you apply for an extension of the right to study directly after your legal right to study has expired, you must submit your application before the end of your studies (in November in the autumn term and May in the spring term). This way, you can continue your studies uninterrupted.

You can also apply for an extension after finishing your studies, up to one or two years after your right to study expired. You can submit your application at any time of year.

Applying for an extension of the right to study for the first time

The following information must be attached to the application:

·  A study plan approved by the relevant discipline, including the degree structure (Flamma: Faculty of Arts » Students » Degrees), an itemised list of the missing compulsory studies, and a schedule for the completion of a) the missing studies, and b) the degree (please observe the expiry of studies).

·  a short free-form description of your personal circumstances (the reasons why your studies have prolonged)

·  If you have not completed your Master’s thesis, you must provide a report on your thesis progress, complete with a statement from your supervisor.

If you are entitled to complete both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, first apply for an extension of your right to complete a Bachelor’s degree.

You must plan your extended studies at an annual progress rate of at least 45 credits. If you wish to progress more slowly, you must provide grounds for the schedule. An extension of the right to study is initially granted for a maximum of four terms, even if the intended duration of the studies is longer.

Applying for an extension more than once

The following information must be attached to the application:

·  A report of the studies completed during the previous extension period

·  A study plan approved by the relevant discipline, including the degree structure (Flamma: Faculty of Arts » Students » Degrees), an itemised list of the missing compulsory studies, and a schedule for the completion of a) the missing studies, and b) the degree (please observe the expiry of studies).

·  If your personal circumstances have changed since your previous application for extension in a way that significantly affects the progress of your studies, a short free-form description of the changed circumstances (including copies of any possible documents relevant in the matter, e.g. medical certificates etc.)

·  If you have not completed your Master’s thesis, you must provide a report on your thesis progress, complete with a statement from your supervisor.

The second time and thereafter, an extension of the right to study is granted for a maximum of two terms, even if the intended duration of the studies is longer.

Decision criteria

When deciding whether or not to extend a right to study, the Faculty considers the student’s circumstances, such as illness, difficult life situation, community engagement while studying, participation in international exchange studies or traineeship abroad, as well as systematic training as an elite athlete.

As a rule, an extension of the right to study cannot exceed the target duration of degree studies as specified in the Universities Act. For example, the maximum duration of an extension of the right to complete a Bachelor's and Master's degree is five (5) academic years.

Decisionmaking and announcement of decision

The dean of the Faculty decides on granting extensions of the right to study. The student is informed of the decision, and any extension of the right to study is recorded in WebOodi. The student is personally responsible for registering as a student at the University.
