NOTE: This is not an application form for PhD candidature. Applicants not currently enrolled at The University of Melbourne must submit a separate application for PhD candidature. The Jointly Awarded PhD degree program is not available to Part Time candidates.
This form must be submitted by the department in addition to the local or international admission form either at the time of application or shortly after the candidate has commenced, and must accompany the contract from the partner institution. The agreement must be finalised early in the first year and well before confirmation of candidature.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

This agreement is governed by the following Intellectual property guidelines.
1.  All intellectual property held by either University prior to entering into this Agreement shall remain the property of that University. However, that University may grant the PhD student and/or the other University a licence to use such intellectual property for any purpose associated with the PhD.
2.  Where the Institutions jointly develop intellectual property as a result of the research work of the PhD student studying under the supervision of the supervisors at both institutions, the terms with respect to title and exploitation of such intellectual property will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis having due regard for each University’s policies and governance requirements The general guiding principle will be that the intellectual property rights created in the course of the PhD will vest in each University in equal shares and that each University may use such jointly-owned intellectual property for internal, non-commercial research and educational purposes.
3.  Nothing in this Agreement will inhibit the right of the PhD student to have their thesis examined and a copy of their thesis lodged in the library of each University (including a digital copy).
4.  Notwithstanding anything to the contrary above, the PhD student shall own the copyright in their thesis.
5.  The above provisions will survive beyond the completion of the PhD.
6.  Any publication or communication of the PhD research, by either University (including by the PhD student or any member of staff of one of the universities), shall be subject, during the period of the PhD, to the written authorisation of both universities.
