APPLICATION FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR DBA SUPPORT 2016/17

GUIDANCE NOTES

This scheme is in addition to the funds that will be made available to support students attending and presenting at the Academy of Management 2017, which will be advertised separately.

Manchester Business School believes it is crucial to support the development of our doctoral researchers and to recognise their achievements. We are therefore very pleased to announce a funding competition open to Alliance MBS doctoral research students.

This scheme is open for applications in support of:

·  presentation at conferences;

·  attendance at summer schools or advanced research training courses.

1.  Criteria for applications

Applications are open to students:

1)  In years 3 to 5 of their studies to present a paper at a conference.

2)  In years 2 to 4 to attend summer schools or other specialist training not available in Manchester.

3)  Students in their first year are not normally eligible to apply for this scheme although we will consider applications from first year students to attend summer schools or other specialist training not available in Manchester.

4)  We will consider conference attendance applications from Submission Pending students where it is clear they are on track to submit their thesis on time, and the conference is timed such that it enables appropriate feedback while writing the thesis for submission or in advance of future submission for journal publication.

2.  General principles

a.  Only one application will be accepted per candidate.

b.  Applications should be for costs that will be incurred in the 2016-17 financial year i.e. to the end of July 2017.

c.  Applications will require a statement from the student and supervisor to support the application for funding, which should be supplied on the application form.

d.  Applications can request funds to cover transport, conferences fees, accommodation and subsistence. All requests need to be fully costed with explanations for the funds required.

e.  Applications to attend a summer school will be only considered where a place has already been offered.

f.  Applications to attend advanced research training will only be considered where the training is judged to be advanced or specialist in nature, is not available in the University, and is of direct benefit to the applicant’s research.

3.  Application Process

Applicants should complete the attached application form with a supporting statement (no more than one page of A4) which includes:

a.  Full details including: name, date, venue of event/conference/training. In your application you should include supporting documentation confirming that you have been accepted to attend.

b.  The total cost of attendance at the event (including registration fees, transport, accommodation, subsistence and visa fees, where applicable).

c.  Supporting statement (include why attending the training or conference will benefit you and how it will impact on your research and studies).

d.  Applicants should also include a short supporting statement/email from their supervisor.

4.  Deadline

There are no deadlines to this call. Applications should be submitted when a place at a conference, summer school, or specialist training has been confirmed.

Applications will be reviewed by the Director of PGR Programmes, Doctoral Programmes Manager and another nominated member of staff; applicants will be notified of a decision within 20 days of receipt of their application.

Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed via the usual PR7 claim process which should be submitted, with receipts, to the Doctoral Programmes Office on return from the conference/training/fieldwork.

Funded students are expected to provide a short statement about their experiences at the conference or training event.
