APPLICATION FOR A SKIP PERMIT

To place a builders skip on a Public Highway within Sheffield, you need to obtain a permit from us (the Local Highway Authority).

Terms

Requests to place a skip on the Public Highway will not be accepted from the person(s) hiring the skip, the request must be made by the Authorised Skip Hire Contractor.

The Highway Authority may grant a skip permit with or without conditions, these conditions could relate to the following:

  • The siting of the skip
  • Its dimensions
  • The manner in which it is to be coated with paint and other materials to make it visible to oncoming traffic
  • The care and disposal of its contents
  • The manner in which it is to be lit at night, signed or guarded
  • Its removal at the end of the period of permission.

It is an offence under section 139(3) of the Highways Act 1980 to place a skip without the required permissions from the Highway Authority.

Costs

A skip permit costs £9.00 for a maximum period of 15 days.

You can contact the Highways Department by phone to apply for additional skip permits where a code will be given to you - see the ‘Contact us’ details at then end of this document. An invoice will then be sent directly to you at the end of the month.

You must be an Authorised Skip Hire Contractor to obtain permission to place a skip on the highway.

Application Evaluation Process

Permission will be given subject to compliance of any conditions placed. The application must include the precise location required and the dates when the permit is required (not exceeding 15 days). Please note that the location of the skip may need to be amended as part of the application process to minimise inconvenience to other parties prior to apermit being granted.

Applications by skip operators for skip permits will only be deemed successful once the application has been processed and a permit is produced.

How we will notify you / Timescales

If authorisation is granted the details will be registered in the skip record book and the skip contractor will be given an exclusive reference code which relates to that skip at the agreed location and for an agreed period.

Complaints and Feedback

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the trader by you, preferably in the form of a letter (with proof of delivery).
