Application Criteria and Instructions

APPLICATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN APRIL 20, 2018. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Scholarship criteria include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Applicant must be a graduating high school senior, current community college or university student in good standing.
  • He/She must be a resident within a 35-mile radius of Sacramento.
  • Applicant must have a minimum 2.7 overall grade point average (GPA).
  • Submit officialhigh school or college transcript(s). Transcripts must be unopened.
  • Identify financial need.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation:
  • One letter from a college mentor or faculty member; or high school teacher or counselor.
  • One letter from a community person who is familiar with your involvements.
  • African-American students are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicant must respond to essay prompts. See instructions at the bottom of this page.
  • Selected candidates will have a personal interview.
  • Please submit personal photo, 3x5 or larger (or electronically using a .jpeg or .png format to ).
  • All scholarship materials, official unopened transcripts, and letters should be submitted in one large envelope.

Essay Instructions
Please submit a typed essay responding to all of the following prompts. Your essay response should be between 150-250 wordsper question. Your essay score will consider whether you identify financial need.
  1. How have you demonstrated leadership ability both in and out of school?
  2. Choose an experience in your life and explain how it shaped your development?
  3. Choose a person or persons you admire and explain why?

Note: If you are awarded a SacNCBW scholarship, there will be an awards ceremony on June 16, 2018.
