THE COMMON SERVICE (p. 15 in the red hymnal)

- WE GATHER TO WORSHIP -

OPENING HYMN: CW #529: “Built on the Rock”

(please stand)

M:In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:♫ Amen.

- WE CONFESS OUR SINS AND ARE ASSURED OF FORGIVENESS -

M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C:Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

C:♫Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.

M:God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:♫ Amen.

- Prayer and praise -

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

C: ♫Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you, for your great glory, O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You take away the sin of the world; receive our prayer. You sit at the right hand of God the Father; have mercy on us. For you only are holy; you only are the Lord. You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M:The Lord be with you.

C:♫ And also with you.

M: Let us pray.

(ALL) Lord God, be gracious to us and bless us. Equip our bodies and minds to resist the attacks of the Evil One and to do your will with a joyful heart. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. ♫ Amen.

(please be seated)

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: Habakkuk 1:1-3; 2:1-4
The prophecythat Habakkuk the prophet received.

2How long,Lord, must I call for help,
but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
but you do not save?
3Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you toleratewrongdoing?
Destruction and violenceare before me;
there is strife,and conflict abounds.

I will stand at my watch
and station myself on the ramparts;
I will look to see what he will sayto me,
and what answer I am to give to this complaint.

2Then theLordreplied:

“Writedown the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a heraldmay run with it.
3For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, waitfor it;
itwill certainly come
and will not delay.

4“See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous personwill live by faith

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 27 , page 75 in the hymnal

SECOND LESSON: II Timothy 1:3-14

3I thank God,whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience,as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.4Recalling your tears,I long to see you,so that I may be filled with joy.5I am reminded of your sincere faith,which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Euniceand, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

6For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.7For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,but gives us power,love and self-discipline.8So do not be ashamedof the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner.Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel,by the power of God.9He has savedus and calledus to a holy life—not because of anything we have donebut because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,10but it has now been revealedthrough the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus,who has destroyed deathand has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.11And of this gospelI was appointeda herald and an apostle and a teacher.12That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame,because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guardwhat I have entrusted to him until that day.

13What you heard from me,keepas the patternof sound teaching,with faith and love in Christ Jesus.14Guardthe good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

VERSE OF THE DAY: CW # 422 vs. 4

Jesus, still lead on Till our rest is won. Heav’nly Leader, still direct us; Still support, console, protect us Till we safely stand In our fatherland.

C: ♫ Glory be to you, O Lord!

GOSPEL: Luke 17:1-10

Jesus said to his disciples:“Things that cause people to stumbleare bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.2It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little onesto stumble.3So watch yourselves.“If your brother or sistersins against you, rebuke them;and if they repent, forgive them.4Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”5The apostlessaid to the Lord,“Increase our faith!”6He replied,“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.7“Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’?8Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on mewhile I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’?9Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?10So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

C: ♫ Praise be to you, O Christ!

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
