- Discuss lessons learned across partnership sizes and models in improving student learning and the learning environment.
- Exchange ideas on what to consider in developing a university or college/school district partnership in an urban setting.
Background: University of Tennessee-Knoxville/Knoxville School District: Large Partnership
The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is the state's flagship, research-intensive university and among the nation's top public universities, with over 26,000 students and 400 academic programs UT-K is a co-manager with Battelle of the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory.Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee is a city with a population of 173,890 located just north of the Great Smoky Mountains, a sub-range of the Appalachian Mountains. Children under 18 comprised almost 27 percent of those in poverty, and individuals in poverty represented almost 21 percent of this total.The Knox County School System (KCSS) serves 56,516 students in 87 schools, including: 50 elementary schools, 14 middle schools, 13 high schools, and 10 schools with other special designations.
Background: Richard Stockton College/Atlantic School District: Small Partnership
Richard Stockton College is a small liberal arts college with approximately 7500 undergraduate and graduate students, is located on 1600 acres of pinelands in southeast New Jersey. Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey, is located along the southeastern shoreline of the state with a population of slightly less than 40,000. In 2007, 37.1% of its children were below poverty level, as is reflective of higher-than-average overall poverty rates in Atlantic City. The Atlantic City School District is a small urban district with approximately 6500 students in 12 schools: 2 pre-K, 8 primary/middle, one high school, and one alternative school.
