March 20, 2017

ATTENDEES: Marcel Giraldi, Melanie Gibson, Patricia Bartlett, Debbie Lowe, Bo Cao, Colleen Crane, Kelly Willis, and Seema Ahmad.

I.  STUDENT’S ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL UPDATE: by Lyba Fatima - Student Activity Prime Minister

The following are activities, intramurals and clubs that are happening at Applewood:

Valentine’s Day
·  Card Making Station On Side Stage (Paper, Glitter, Stickers, Kids Cards)
·  The Newlywed Game
Semi-Formal (Enchanted)
·  Friday, February 24th (6 pm - 11 pm)
·  Red Rose Convention Centre
·  170 Guests
·  Awards (Best Dressed, Best Dancer, and Cutest Couples, all w/ Prizes!)
·  Photo booth, Gold Balloons
·  Overall, positive review
March Spirit Week
·  Monday - March Sweep Week (Favourite bands, tv show, etc) and Bobbing For Donuts
·  Tuesday - (Half Day) Grade Wars (red, blue, purple, and white)
·  Wednesday - Axemen Gear and Scavenger Hunt
·  Thursday - We The North (Toronto based clothing), Kahoot and ‘What’s The Lyric’ Game
·  Friday - Pajama Day and Video Games (NBA, FIFA, etc.) / Upcoming Events
·  Early April SAC Executive Elections
·  April 6th – 9th Peel Student Council Conference
·  April 24th – 28th Student Council Elections
·  May Spirit Week (Organized by new council)

·  Regional Sports Program – 93 accepted Incoming students (2017/2018 School Year)
·  Sears Drama Festival Play, ‘Booked It’, Cawthra Park SS Feb. 22 – Aliya wrote the play and received recognition for her acting
·  Semi-Formal, February 24
·  Peel Dance Showcase, March 9 – First time Applewood participated 14 students participated
·  Police/Student Basketball Game, March 10th raised $1200, supported 2 students ($500 each) for Special Olympics, remainder given to Peel police charity
·  ROPSSAA Hockey Finals
·  ROPSSAA Boys Basketball Finals (Jr./Sr.)
·  OFSSAA Swimming Championships
Applewood Heights Update
·  Bike Racks – modern looking: purchased in January pending installation just in time for spring (Bloor/Tomken area)
·  ahss@50, April 22-23 1:00 – 5:00 pm decades room $10 cost for entry; reception after – Council Fonseca to donate a tree and student council to plant a tree; every student will get a backpack commemorating the 50th
·  Enrollment Projections, and Staffing Update for Sept. 2017 – 5 new additional teachers to be added for projected enrollment of 1143. Increase in new students due to Regional Sports Program, Visa, and Neighborhood.
·  Feedback of Code of Conduct Review, 2017-2018
·  ‘Your Voice Counts’ Survey
·  Plant/Building Upgrades: Currently the back doors are being replaced as well as the front doors. SUMMER - Improvements to the air venting system, washroom sinks and cubicle partitions; water refilling station on main floor and phys ed hallway expected. PDSB will pay. / Looking Forward

III.  SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE: Sue Lawton

·  Your Voice Counts application circulated to School Council.

·  Trustees advocate for the needs of their communities, explain the policies and decisions of the board and work with all levels of government to help ensure student success.

·  Religious Accommodation Operating Procedures current topic of discussion at Board Meetings. The Board is bound by law (Human Rights Commission) to provide accommodation in every school. Delegations are closed for this issue.

·  Trustees meet as a board on a regular basis and also participate on organized standing committees. Check Peel website for Board Meeting Schedule. Meetings are open to the public and feature open public question periods

·  Currently recruiting for Director of Education and Director of Communications. Committee working with a search firm for both positions. Target hire date, end of May.

IV.  CHAIR’S REPORT: Melanie Gibson, Co-Chair

·  PRO Grant 2018/19: application due by May 25th – Career theme – $252 left from 2017/18 to be returned to the Ministry of Education

·  Children’s Mental Health Week:

o  Supporting Healthy Minds on May 4th – Chief Psychologist for the Board - Jack Kamrad “Building Resilience”

o  Peel Children Centre to provide brochure and flyers (Tangerine Walk-In Counselling)

o  Registration and refreshments at 6:30 pm

o  Keynote speaker starts at 7 pm

o  Parent Engagement Fund $500 will be used to fund this event

·  PDSB 2017/18 Budget Consultation: budget survey to be completed by Co-Chairs on behalf of Council. The Peel District School Board is seeking input from staff, parents, students and community members to help shape its 2017-18 school year budget. Input will be collected through a School Council consultation process, delegations and an online survey. The online survey and additional resources are available atwww.peelschools.org/BUDGET.

V.  OTHER BUSINESS:

·  Kelly Willis shared data at the meeting regarding collision statistics on Tomken Road.
