There are many kinds of apples—Baldwin, Cortland, red delicious, golden delicious, Empire, Gala, Jonathan, Lodi, Melrose, Puritan, Rome Beauty, granny smith, stayman, and winesap.

Similarities of apples include: skin, seeds, all come from trees, can be eaten raw or cooked, have a core and stem

Differences: color, where they come from, what climate they can be grown in, how they taste, how many seeds, how big or small, what time of year it grows, texture, inside color.

Apples are one of the oldest of all fruits grown by fruit growers. Different varieties of apples have been cultivated by growers for at least 2,000 years. About 2,500 different varieties are found in the United States.

Each variety of apple is grown for special food uses. Some types of apples make better cider or juice. Other kinds of apples are used for cooking or eating. Apples may be colored shades of red, green, or yellow.

The United States produces approximately one-third of the world's crop.

2. Brainstorming: When brainstorming there are many different parts of an apple and it is important to categorize this information.

Foods: juice, pie, tarts, sauce, cider, jellies, butter, muffins, bread

Parts: seed, core, meat, skin, stem

Colors: red, yellow green

Origin: orchards, seeds soil, sunshine, water, trees, blossoms, fruit

Forms: dry, cooked, baked, raw

3. Ways of cutting: You can cut an apple in many different ways. When you do this, it turns out differently than you would think. For example. (tell them about it, don’t show them)

cut apple into shapes, dip in paint and then place on paper, creating and apple print picure

5. Food: Apples are used for a variety of foods. Here are some recipes that can be used for apples. (read the recipes)

Applesauce

30 large apples

2 ½ cups water

1 ½ cups sugar

1 T. red hots

Peel and core and cut into pieces. Place in large kettle of water and simmer on low heat until soft. Add other ingredients. Stir and simmer for a few minutes . cool prior to eating.

Caramel Apple Slices (12-14 kids)

1 lb. Caramel

2 T. water

dash salt

6 apples

melt caramels with water stirring frequently. Stir in salt. Pour melted caramel over sliced apples.

  1. Science: Apples change color when the inside comes in contact with oxygen. They turn brown. For this reason, you should do the following to protect them from turning brown:

Oxidation of apples. Dip half of apple into lemon juice and place on plate and remaining sections just on a plate. The lemon juice coating keeps the oxygen from the apples. They don’t discolor as rapidly.
