Table A1. Description of lakes surveyed in this study.Abbr gives the lake abbreviation used elsewhere in the manuscript. WBIC is the Waterbody Identification Code, a unique identifier used by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). Latitude and longitude are given at the centroid of the lake in decimal degrees.Areawascalculated within a Geographic Information System (GIS; ArcGIS 9.2) from digitized 1:24,000 topographic maps. Distance is the straight-line distance from the lake centroid to the town of Minocqua, which is the major population center (permanent population 4,859 as of 2000 census) and tourism hub in the region.Zmaxis the maximum depth of the lake(Black et al. 1963). ZSecchi is the Secchi depth estimated from Landsat imagery (Johnson et al. 2008). Housing is the shoreline housing density, which wasdetermined using GIS as the number of houses in a 100-m buffer around the shore (based on aerial photos from 1992 and 1996) divided by lake perimeter. Cond is conductivity measured in the surface water; data are from online data catalogs associated with two regional lake surveys by the North Temperate Lakes Long Term Ecological Research Project (lter.limnology.wisc.edu). O. rusticus indicates whether this invasive crayfish species is present (‘1’) or absent (‘0’); data are based on surveys by the WDNR, the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, and the Center for Limnology, University of Wisconsin(Johnson et al. 2008). Access indicates whether there is a public boat access point on the lake, based on a WDNR database: ‘n’ indicates no public access, ‘r’ indicates that there is an improved public boat ramp, and ‘c’ indicates carry-in access only.
