Appendix B. Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria for the Included Studies

Schmitz 2010 / Age ≥ 16 years with uncomplicated skin abscesses requiring incision and drainage / Patients who were immunocompromised, pregnant,breast feeding, allergic to sulfa drugs, had associated fever or signs of systemic illness, had received antibiotics in the previous week, had been hospitalized in the previous month, had abscesses on the face, known or suspected tracts or fistulas to deeper structures, or abscesses requiring operating room drainage.
Duong 2010 / Age 3 months to 18 years with skin abscesses defined as: acute onset within 1 week, fluctuant, erythematous, indurated, and tender on palpation. / Patients with known chronic health problems (eg, diabetes), were receiving immunosuppressive medications, such as oral steroids for asthma, had recent (within the last week) or current antibiotic usage, or had any contraindication to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, such as a history of hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or trimethoprim. Minor or superficial skin infections not requiring incision and drainage (eg, folliculitis) were also excluded.
Talan 2016 / Age ≥ 12 years with a clinically-suspected abscess ≥ 2 cm in diameter and present less than one week / Patients with an indwelling device, suspected osteomyelitis or septic arthritis, diabetic foot ulcer, decubitus ulcer, ischemic ulcer, mammalian bite,wound with organic foreign body, infection of another organ system or location, perirectal abscess, perineal abscess, paronychial abscess, intravenous drug use within the previous month and fever, underlying skin condition, long-term care residence, incarceration, immunodeficiency (eg, absolute neutrophil count <500/mm3, immunosuppressive drugs, active chemotherapy, or known AIDS assessed by subject history), creatinine clearance <50 mL/min, cardiac condition with risk of endocarditis, allergy or intolerance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole,currently taking warfarin, phenytoin, or methotrexate, known G-6-PD or folic acid deficiency, pregnant or lactating, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment within 24 hours, concurrent treatment with a topical or systemic antibiotic, or previously enrolled in the study within the prior 12 weeks.
Daum 2017 / All patients with a single abscess (defined as a circumscribed, drainable collection of pus) with a diameter ≤ 5 cm. / Patients with superficial skin infections, infection at a body site requiring specialized management, human or animal bites, oral temperature > 38.5°C (or >38.0°C for children 6 to 11 months of age), presence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome criteria, immunosuppressive therapy or an immunocompromising condition, a body-mass index higher than 40, surgical site or prosthetic device infection, or systemic anti-staphylococcal antibacterial therapy in the previous 14 days. Participants that required hospitalization, lived in a long-term care facility, or had cancer or an inflammatory disorder treated.
