Appendix AScott County High School AP Program
Board Proposal
Due to the efforts of all AP Teachers, our Administration, Central Office, the Board of Education, and the NMSI Grant, Scott County High School’s Advanced Placement program has developed into one of the state’s top AP Programs. We are extremely proud that we have adopted a philosophy of open enrollment and that we encourage all our students to take the most rigorous courses available to them. The NMSI Grant has provided substantial funding for math, science, and English AP Courses; however, our school-wide culture and growth in ALL courses has been affected by our participation in this grant. As we look ahead to the future, without continued financial support from NMSI, we feel there are 3 components most important for continued success and growth of the SCHS Advanced Placement Program:
- AP Saturday Study Sessions
- Support for Exam Fees
- Teacher Training

Support for Exam Fees – Essential Component for Success
We would love to continue offering reduced exam fees for all students and all subjects or, at least, for students taking multiple exams. We feel financial support is essential for encouraging students to take all the exams for the all the AP courses they take.
Advanced Placement Exam Fee per course = $89
Reduced cost of NMSI supported math, science, and English exams over the last 4 years = $45 ($44 of each exam covered by NMSI)
Real Example:
Student A has 5 AP classes her senior year.
Cost of exam fees without financial support equals $445.
Cost of exam fees with school support are $225.
1,051 enrollments x $44 per exam = $46,244 (cost if all exams were supported financially)
Providing half of all exam fees may be unrealistic, so we would like some commitment to helping those taking multiple exams.
Pre-AP/AP Teacher Training : Essential Component for Success
Teacher training is essential to increasing rigor in the classroom. Our teachers need 2 types of training.
LTF (Laying the Foundation) = Pre-AP Training; this training links all lessons directly to the Common Core Standards and helps all teachers, including special ed., to increase rigor. It is aligned vertically with AP.
APSI (Advance Placement Summer Institute) = AP Training; this is required for any teacher teaching an AP course; teachers must also have syllabus audited by the AP College Board.
This is a chart of trainings that teachers have requested. The cost reflects only the registration fees (travel expenses not included and could be covered by the school).
