Fish Tales
News and reports from Broad Oak Trout Lakes September 2016
Apologies for the late delivery! Where did August go? Anyway, we are relieved it is gone, as the summer is always a worrying time, not knowing if we are going to get some scorching sun to boil the fish.
The autumnal nights refresh the lakes, and my nightly constitutionals to lock up the chickens are accompanied by the many and varied gloop of another late night snack for a hungry trout.
The Shepherds hut attracted its first few guests, and they really enjoyed their stay. Only one fishing guest so far, but that will change, I know, as we have more booked in already! Reviews have been fantastic, which is lovely for us, knowing that the hard work has paid off.
We have welcomed some new fishermen to Broad Oak Trout Lakes this summer, so we hope to welcome you back again soon.
Some of our members are keen salmon anglers as well as trout fishermen, and one is Gordon Walters who has enjoyed success on the Wye this year. Well done Gordon, your patience paid off at last!
Fly of the month – August.
I thought it would be hard to pick a fly of the month for August but having gone through the record sheet we have two clear winners! Top fly, by a narrow margin is the trusty ‘Damsel’, some with a blue flash, others not, and second, at last, is the Buzzer, mainly black and green. There have been countless trawls to the depths of the oldest fly box, so we have some flies that I am unfamiliar with. Do you recognise a Griffin or a Dung? Other successful flies have been GRHE and Montana. And right at the end of the month (and continuing this) the daddy long legs has begun to make an appearance! We have plenty in stock!
Catch of the Month – August
The out-right winner of biggest fish for August 2016 is…… Roger Pope!! Well done Roger, a 4lb beauty was hooked on a breezy day earlier in the month. The remainder have been around the 2lb mark, with a few being a bit light due to feeding conditions.
Goldie is STILL THERE!! He wasn’t seen for a while and we began to fear for the worst, but then on his last visit, Roger nearly broke into a sprint to come up and put his £1 in the pot, so I suspect Goldie was glimpsed!!
Weather Forecast (taken from Met Office website)
September has started with a wetting, but it should clear up soon and become quite a balmy month, with daytime temperatures slightly above average. We should expect some lovely sunshine this coming week, moving to a slightly more changeable picture including some showers, but still good for the time of year. The latter part of the month is pretty uncertain currently but there are inklings of Indian summer….
