APA Style at a Glance

Use this style sheet to help you compile a Reference page for books, encyclopedias, Internet articles, and database articles.

Books

Book by one author:

Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Copyright date). Title of the book. Place of publication:

Publisher.

Examples:

Parks, P.J. (2010). Solar power. San Diego, CA: ReferencePoint Press.

Solway, A. (2010). Resources. Mankato, MN: Smart Apple Media.

Book by two or more authors:

First Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial., 2nd Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial.,

3rd Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Copyright date). Title of book. Place of

Publication: Publisher.

Example:

Silverstein, A., Silverstein, V. B., & Nunn, L. S. (1998). Food chains. Brookfield, CT: Twenty-First Century

Books.

Book by an editor:

Editor’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Ed.)(Copyright date). Title of the book. Place of

Publication: Publisher.

Example:

Rossey, C. A. (Ed.). (1999). Fundamentals of social science research. London: Basnight.

Encyclopedia Article from a Familiar Encyclopedia:

Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Copyright date). Title of article. In Title of Encyclopedia

(Vol #, pp, #). Place of publication: Publisher.

Example:

Bergmann, P. G. (1993). Relativity. In The New Encyclopedia Britannica (Vol. 26, pp. 501-508). Chicago:

Encyclopedia Britannica.

Journals and Magazines

Print Journal/Magazine Article:

Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Year, Month Day of publication). Title of the article. Name

of the Journal,(Volume #)(Issue #), page number(s).

Example:

Dicum, G. (2007, September). Eyes in the sky and on your desktop. Sierra, (92)(5), 58-92.

Internet Article:

Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial.orName of Organization. (Year, Month Day created or

updated). Title of the webpage/article. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from webpage address

Example:

Monterey Bay Aquarium. (2009). Sea otters at risk. Retrieved October 8, 2009, from

Electronic Articles

Encyclopedia Article (retrieved from a database):

Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Copyright date). Title of the article. In Title of the

Encyclopedia. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from Name of

Database.

Example:

McGrath, J. (2008). Invasive species. In Gale Encyclopedia of Science. 4th ed. Detroit: Gale Group.

Retrieved October 8, 2009, from Student Resource Center - Bronze.

Journal/Magazine Article (retrieved from a database):

Author’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Year, Month Day of publication). Title of the article.

Title of the Magazine, Volume #(Issue #), page number(s). Retrieved Month Day, Year, from Name

of Database.

Example:

Walsh, B. (2009, April 13). The new age of extinction. Time, 173(14), 43. Retrieved October 8, 2009, from
