Class Schedule: 8/31-9/4

IMPORTANT REMINDERS—As we really get into reading about new material this week, make sure that you are:

·  taking thorough notes as you read—and paying attention to the themes and questions associated with the reading.

·  Also make sure that you are working the VOCABULARY (the list for the ENTIRE SEMESTER is already posted on the blog) into your notes! Remember—you need to understand those terms in the context of history!

·  Vocabulary associated with the reading for Wednesday-Friday can be found on the vocab list under Ch. 10.

Monday 8/31:

·  Classwork—Primary Source Analysis

·  Reading—Download the primary sources from the blog (the files will indicate reading to prep for Monday)

Ø  The background file is for your information. It does a pretty of good of summarizing some important information about the Byzantine world

Ø  READ the excerpts from BOTH On the Buildings AND The Secret History. There are some questions included with the readings. You should come to class able to discuss those questions.

Tuesday 9/1:

·  Topic—The Byzantine Empire and its Impact on Eastern Europe (the Rise of Kievan Russia)

·  Reading—

Ø  Ch. 9 intro on p. 194-195 (each chapter in Stearns usually starts with a story that is related to something in the chapter, but the story sometimes relates to something later in the chapter. The intro stories usually have some very valuable details, and this one relates to this later part of Ch. 9—that in part of the reading below).

Ø  Read p. 203-209 (starting at “The Spread of Civilization in Eastern Europe to the end of Ch. 9…it’s not as much as it sounds like!). DON’T SKIP the document on p. 206, but you CAN SKIP the “In-Depth” reading on p. 208!

Major Themes &Questions:

§  Religion—read about Cyril and Methodius as well as about Vladimir I (that includes the document on p. 206) With this reading you should be able to discuss religion in Kievan Russia

§  In what ways did the Byzantines influence Kievan Russia?

Wednesday 9/2:

·  Topic—Collapse of Western Roman Empire, Germanic Kingdoms, and the Exception of Charlemagne

·  Reading—download the file on the blog that says reading for WEDNESDAY

Themes and Questions:

Ø  Migration—Who? Where? Why?

Ø  Describe Germanic society (I know the reading often uses barbarian—because that’s what the Romans called them—YOU SHOULD NOT!):

o  ideas about government

o  social structures (gender, family & kinship, social & economic classes)

o  economy (only a little here but make sure you get it)

Ø  Trace the development of the Frankish kingdom of Clovis and the Merovingians.

Ø  Charles Martel---why is he important????

Ø  Charlemagne: empire, political structure/form of governance, cultural achievements

Thursday 9/3:

·  Topic—9th-10th Century Invasions and Migrations and the Feudal System

·  Reading from file—download the file on the blog that says reading FOR THURSDAY (it should be about feudalism and another wave on migrations/invasions in Western Europe).

Themes & Questions:

Ø  Discuss the political conditions in Western Europe that gave rise to the development of feudalism.

Ø  Discuss the economy in Western Europe in this period—a system often referred to as manorialism—

Ø  What labor system came to dominate during this period?

Ø  Theme: migration…a new wave in the 9th and 10th centuries—who? where? how? overall impact?

Friday 9/4:

·  Topic—The Early Medieval Church

·  Reading from file—Download the reading FOR FRIDAY about Christianity in Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire

Themes and Questions:

Ø  What was Charlemagne’s attitude toward religion? (it’s a little hard to tell in this reading but see if you can extrapolate!)

Ø  Theme: religion (in Western Europe)

§  the development of the concept of a universal religion

§  western monasticism

o  how did it relate to education?

o  how did ideas about western monasticism affect the role of religious leaders in overall society? how did this compare with the east? with Muslim society? with Buddhist Asian society?
