AP STUDIO ART: Assignment List

Sketchbook Instructions

--Please format all assignments correctly:

1. 1/2" Border (optional)

2. Name in bottom right corner

3. Assignment title (or NUMBER) in bottom left corner

--All sketchbook assignments should take a minimum of 60 minutes to complete.

--All sketchbook pieces should be worked to the borders

Assignment #2: 3 Simple Forms
-Choose three basic forms and arrange on page. Aim is to show SPACE! Use methods discussed in class: higher on page, overlapping, smaller, etc. Shade forms with enough VALUES to create the illusion of 3-Dimensional space in your drawing. Don't forget CAST shadows...
Assignment #3: 2 Metallic Objects
-Choose two metallic objects from your kitchen
-Draw them together-OVERLAPPING. Draw from a 3/4 view...
-Draw BIG! Use the whole paper, its okay if the drawing is cut off by the border
-Try to capture the reflected light... HIGHLIGHTS!
-Don't forget cast shadows...
Assignment #4: Draw your hand!
Make a high contrast value drawing of your hand. Use at least 5 values. Use the whole page.
-Put non-drawing hand down on the table in front of you and draw it. Place hand in an interesting manner and be sure to draw from a 3/4 view.
-Use a single light source.
-Employ the 5 principles of shading.
-HIGH CONTRAST! Exaggerate the contrast in your drawing...
Assignment #5: Contour
Make at least 25 contour drawings from observation of anything around you.
-Use the whole page
-Fill the space behind the objects you draw
-Make it count for something!

Assignment #6: WordArt

Fill an entire page with words! (50+) You choice of words but there should be a theme. Do not just repeat the same word. They can be random, connected by your theme, or from a song, poem, etc. Use a variety of lettering styles! Letters should be thick, thin, fancy, curved, overlapping, etc. Use any media you want.

Assignment #7: Contour Shoe

Make a contour drawing of your shoe from the side. Make a nice clean line. Draw it big so you have room for plenty of interior details. This one does not need a background--yet!

PART 2: Full color background in your choice of media. Marker, watercolor, etc.


Assignment #8: Overlapping forms
Use at least 15 forms to create a pencil drawing composition.
-Draw a 1/2" border
-Compose drawing of 15 overlapping forms. Make sure some go all the way to the border! Fill the whole page!
-Imagine they are floating in space--not on the ground... So they should be at a variety of angles...
-Choose a single light source and then shade accordingly. Use a range of values.
-Use an HB or standard #2 pencil to get underway, you can use 2B, 4B pencil to add darker shading in class.

Assignment #9: Overlapping forms--Pen!
Use at least 15 forms to create a pencil drawing composition.
-Draw a 1/2" border
-Compose drawing of 15 overlapping forms. Make sure some go all the way to the border! Fill the whole page!
-Imagine they are floating in space--not on the ground... So they should be at a variety of angles...
-Choose a single light source (pick a corner) and then shade accordingly. Use a range of values.
-Values and shadow should be created using crosshatching or stippling techniques. Combo ok too. Make sure you are using a fine line pen.
--Try not to make thick outlines around your forms!
Assignment #10: Drawing your keys
Complete a sketchbook drawing of your keys.
-1/2 inch border
-place connected keys down in an interesting manner to draw. 2 to 3 keys is all you need to do, so you can add or remove keys as necessary.
-choose a single light source
-sketch lightly with pencil. Make sure the composition touches at least 2 edges. Part of the keys should be cut off!
-Finish drawing either by: 1. darken and shade with drawing pencils. 2. Darken and shade using pen techniques. No outlines on finished drawing! Use 5 principles of shading!

Assignment #11: Observational drawing—organics

Complete a sketchbook drawing of a branch with leaves.

-1/2 inch border

-Find a branch or twig with a couple of leaves. Draw it from direct observation. Focus on light and shadow.

-Be sure that you compose your drawing so that it reaches two sides of your frame.

-Fill the whole frame. Use background shading for contrast.

-Use any single drawing medium or a combination; pencil, pen, charcoal, etc.

Assignment #12: ½ portrait collage

Paste ½ Xerox copy of photo into sketchbook

-complete the other half of face with collage

Assignment #13: ½ portrait paint

-complete other half of face with paint using fingers only!

Assignment #14: Mixed Media

-complete outdoor classroom sketch using mixed media techniques. Refer to powerpoint for review…
